Stefanos Tsitsipas overcame Alexandre Muller in under 90 minutes, with the help of seven aces and 28 winners. Despite suffering one break of serve, he converted four break points on the Frenchman to secure the win.

The world No. 12 will now face Russian Daniil Medvedev, the 5th seed, in what promises to be an intriguing match due to their long-standing rivalry, which began in 2018 when they first faced each other.

That match, won by Medvedev, ended with a heated exchange at the net during the Miami Open.

Since then, Tsitsipas and Medvedev have met 12 more times, with the Russian leading the head-to-head 9-4. This will be their first encounter in 2024. Their most recent match, in the semifinals of the Vienna Open in 2023, was also won by Medvedev, 6-4, 7-6 (6).

Medvedev reached the round of 16 after tough battles against Brazil’s Thiago Seyboth Wild (7-5, 7-5) in the second round and Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi, the 29th seed, (5-7, 6-4, 6-4) in the third.

On the other hand, Tsitsipas defeated Japanese wildcard Kei Nishikori (7-6 (6), 6-4) before his win over Muller.

Tsitsipas and Medvedev have shared several tense moments both on and off the court, often amusing fans with their unique victory celebrations.

The bitterness between the two seems to have cooled somewhat, especially after their recent joint campaign for Team Europe at the 2024 Laver Cup. However, Shanghai will soon reveal if that truce holds.

Stefanos Tsitsipas has had an eventful journey at the Shanghai Masters over the years, showcasing both his potential and struggles on one of the biggest stages in tennis.

As one of the sport’s rising stars, Tsitsipas has consistently been a player to watch in this ATP 1000 event, competing against the world’s top-ranked players.

Tsitsipas first made headlines in Shanghai when he reached the semi-finals in 2019, a breakthrough year in his career. His deep run at the tournament cemented his status as a top contender on the ATP Tour.

Notably, during that event, he secured a major victory over world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals, a win that demonstrated his capability to challenge even the most established names in tennis.

Although he eventually fell to Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals, that performance set the tone for Tsitsipas as a strong competitor in Masters 1000 events.

In subsequent editions of the Shanghai Masters, Tsitsipas has faced a mix of successes and challenges, battling injuries and form issues, yet continuing to prove why he remains a dangerous opponent on hard courts.

His game, built on aggressive baseline play, powerful serving, and sharp net approaches, is well-suited to the fast-playing conditions in Shanghai.
