The launch of La Quête du Temps (The Quest of Time) isn’t just a timepiece—it’s a grand expression of craftsmanship, heritage, and astronomical wonder. With both a towering astronomical clock and a complementary limited-edition wristwatch, Vacheron Constantin demonstrates how tradition and innovation can merge to tell time in ways that feel almost poetic.

Seven Years of Creation, Seven Patents: The Quest of Time Clock project spanned seven years of development. During that time, Vacheron Constantin filed seven new patents. The clock is made from 6,293 mechanical components and more than 1,000 decorative elements. It features 23 complications.

The Astronomical Clock: A Monumental Masterpiece

Astronomer Automaton & Kinetic Art: The clock includes an automaton modeled as an astronomer figure. It performs three choreographed sequences, totaling about a minute and a half, either on demand or programmed ahead.

The work combines artistic crafts such as engraving, enamel, gem setting, marquetry, mother-of-pearl inlay, and miniature painting—highlighting how Vacheron Constantin embraces both technical and artistic métiers d’art.

Spectacular Specifications: The astronomical clock is over a metre tall, with dimensions approximately 1070 mm by 503 mm, and weighs about 250 kg. It includes a modern tourbillon calibre 9270 with multiple displays: civil time, retrograde hours and minutes, perpetual calendar, moon phase precision (110 years without correction), rising and setting times, celestial vault, zodiac signs, and more.

The Wristwatch Tribute: Small Scale, Grand Detail

Limited Edition & Double-Face Display: To accompany the monumental clock, Vacheron Constantin also released a Métiers d’Art Tribute to The Quest of Time wristwatch. Only 20 pieces will be made. It required three years of its own development.

Complex Mechanics & Beautiful Design: The watch houses Calibre 3670 with 512 components and multiple complications: double retrograde hour and minute display, a three-dimensional moon phase, a sky chart showing constellations from Geneva on the founding date of the Maison, sidereal time, and a double retrograde power reserve. The case is 18K white gold, 43 mm in diameter, about 13.6 mm thick, water resistant to 3 bar. The strap is dark blue alligator leather with white gold clasp.

Legacy, Craftsmanship & Symbolic Meaning

Heritage and Partnership with the Louvre: This unveiling is part of Vacheron Constantin’s anniversary celebrations and is strongly tied to its partnership with the Louvre museum. The astronomical clock will be displayed in the “Mécaniques d’Art” exhibition at the Louvre from mid-September to mid-November 2025. It serves both as a technical showpiece and a tribute to centuries of horological artistry.

Demonstration of Expertise Across Domains: The project involved experts from multiple fields: Vacheron Constantin’s in-house watchmakers, specialist automaton makers, astronomers, and master artisans. Techniques span gem-setting, miniature painting, high-relief engraving, mother-of-pearl, enamel, rock crystal, marquetry, and bronze sculpture. It emphasizes how the brand maintains artisanal skills, perhaps lost in more mass-market watches.
