Excellence through the ages

The exhibit delves into the soul of the Maison by showcasing the guiding philosophy behind its legacy: the enduring motto, first adopted in 1819, “Do better if possible, and that is always possible.” Divided into thematic segments—The Beginning, Artistic Crafts and Finishes, High Watchmaking and Grand Complications, and finally, The Quest—each section explores a different facet of the brand’s commitment to excellence.

The opening chapter of the exhibit sheds light on the origins of Vacheron Constantin, rooted in the pivotal moment when Jean-Marc Vacheron signed a contract with his first apprentice in 1755. Through original documents, vintage photographs, and historically significant timepieces, visitors can trace the early footsteps of a brand that would go on to influence the future of horology.

The Artistic Crafts and Finishing section honors the skilled artisans whose hands bring Vacheron Constantin’s vision to life. From intricate enameling and guilloché to masterful engraving and gemstone setting, this segment illustrates how the Maison continues to preserve ancient techniques while refining them for the modern age. Here, the past and future merge in an unbroken flow of expertise and artistic flair.

270 years of watchmaking wonders

High Watchmaking takes center stage in another part of the exhibit, showcasing some of the most sophisticated mechanisms developed by the brand. A highlight of this section is the remarkable Les Cabinotiers – The Berkley Grand Complication, which debuted in 2024 as the most complex timepiece ever produced. With 2,877 components and 63 complications—including the first-ever Chinese perpetual calendar—this masterpiece symbolizes the pinnacle of horological achievement.

As an added cultural layer, ceramic artist and tea master Shota Yamada will present his work at StandBy, adjacent to the main venue, from April 26 to May 7. His tea ceremonies, rooted in mindfulness and aesthetics, align with Vacheron Constantin’s reverence for tradition and self-betterment.

“The Quest: 270 years of seeking excellence” not only traces a legacy but also challenges every visitor to reflect on what it means to strive for mastery. As the exhibition travels the world, it continues to affirm the Maison’s core message: excellence is a journey, not a destination.
