Stefanos Tsitsipas, the Greek star, currently ranked No. 11 in the PIF ATP Rankings, is pursuing a berth at the prestigious Nitto ATP Finals, adding more at stake to his Paris run as he eyes one of the final season-ending tournament spots. Aiming to establish his place as a top contender, Tsitsipas needs to reach the final in Paris to secure direct entry to the Finals in Turin, an event where he first claimed victory in 2019 during his debut.

In Thursday’s match, Tsitsipas demonstrated remarkable resilience and composure to defeat Argentina’s Francisco Cerúndolo with a hard-fought scoreline of 6-7(1), 6-4, 6-2. The contest was anything but straightforward, with Cerúndolo’s forehand relentlessly testing Tsitsipas’s resolve on the Bercy indoor courts.

Despite a slow start that saw him drop the first-set tiebreaker, Tsitsipas held his focus and served with precision to claim the remaining two sets without conceding his own serve, ultimately extending his Lexus ATP Head2Head record against Cerúndolo to 2-0.

Tsitsipas battles

This victory also follows their recent encounter at the ATP 500 event in Basel, where Tsitsipas similarly outlasted Cerúndolo in three sets, underlining his steady progress on indoor courts late in the season.

The Paris Masters, held at the renowned Accor Arena in Bercy, is a significant stop for Tsitsipas, who has reached the tournament’s semifinals in both of the past two editions. Now, he aims to go even further in a quest for his first hard-court ATP Masters 1000 title.

Standing in his way in the quarterfinals is third-seeded Alexander Zverev, who defeated France’s Arthur Fils 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in his own Round of 16 match. The face-off between Tsitsipas and Zverev promises high-stakes competition, with Tsitsipas holding a favorable Lexus ATP Head2Head record of 10-5.

Notably, he has emerged victorious in six of their last seven ATP Masters 1000 meetings, including their most recent clash earlier this year, en route to his Monte Carlo title on clay.

Focused on finals

As Tsitsipas battles for his Finals spot, other competitors are leaving their mark as well. Francisco Cerúndolo, who earned his 100th career win in the Paris opening rounds, is scheduled to conclude his season next week at the ATP 250 event in Belgrade.

Tsitsipas remains resolute in his goal of capturing a fourth ATP Masters 1000 title, a feat that would mark his first on a hard court. Having secured his third Masters 1000 trophy on the clay courts of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters earlier this season, the Greek star aims to translate his success to the indoor hard courts, ending his season on a high note.
