Belonging to The Hillstone Grupo and built in 1883 on a miner’s shoe-string budget of $300, this charming structure stands tall at 302 East Hopkins Avenue, one of the oldest remaining buildings in Aspen. Originally, it served as a humble miner’s cottage, a stark contrast to its current role as a vibrant gathering spot for locals and celebrities alike.

Clad in a crisp white coat with a bright green door as a welcoming pop of color, The White House Tavern embodies the Carpenter Gothic style. Imagine Gothic arches and soaring spires translated into wood – that’s Carpenter Gothic in a nutshell. Steeply pitched roofs, intricate jigsaw-cut details, and the all-white palette all contribute to the building’s unique charm.

Step inside, and the warmth practically engulfs you. Reclaimed wood floors cradle your steps, while wood-paneled walls and cozy banquette seating create a sense of comfortable intimacy. The original fireplace, preserved in its rightful place, adds a touch of historical charm.

A modern addition seamlessly blends with the original structure, housing a state-of-the-art exhibition kitchen. Outside, a new brick patio and landscaped garden pay homage to the building’s scale, creating a harmonious whole.

Fast forward a century, and this former miner’s haven has transformed into a culinary hotspot. Here, vacationers and A-listers rub elbows,  enjoying a selection of sandwiches, crispy fries, and an enticing range of wines and cocktails.

Best chicken sandwich in town

The menu is straightforward and satisfying. While the focus is decidedly on premium sandwiches, with a few salads includes for variety, the quality of ingredients and the sheer deliciousness of the dishes will leave you wanting more.

The Luster recommendation is the crispy chicken nestled in a house-made torta, a legendary creation known as the “ever-popular crispy chicken sandwich.” Feeling peckish? The “gargantuan Macho Salad” with its medley of roasted chicken, mixed greens, avocado, dates, creamy goat cheese, and a sprinkle of almonds and fresh corn, is a substantial and appetizing dish in its own right.

The lively atmosphere, enhanced by the exhibition kitchen and eye-catching artwork, harmonize with the warmth of the wood-paneled space to perfection. Whether you’re a local resident or just passing through, The White House Tavern’s simple menu and casual vibe cater to all tastes, making it a true Aspen staple.
