Amanara Claims Terralpa Silver Cup Glory in Sotogrande

The Amanara team made history on Saturday, August 16, by clinching the coveted Terralpa Silver Cup for High Handicap Polo at the 54th Sotogrande International Polo Tournament.

 

The dramatic final saw Amanara narrowly defeat Black Bears with a 12-9 score, on field number 3 at Ayala Polo Club  in Sotogrande neighborhood, San Roque, Cádiz, Spain.

This victory marked a significant milestone in one of Europe’s most exclusive sporting events, renowned for attracting the world’s premier polo talents.

 

Held in Sotogrande, the tournament is renowned for its high-level competition, blending sport, tradition, and luxury.

 

The 54th Sotogrande International Polo Tournament features three competitive categories: High Handicap (20-22 goals), Medium Handicap (12-14 goals), and Low Handicap (6-8 goals).

 

The Silver Cup, one of the event’s highlights, is the second stop, following the Bronze Cup, and sets the tone for the prestigious Gold Cup in August.

The event, which began on August 4, showcases top-tier polo action with an array of talented players and teams from around the globe. As the most exclusive summer event in Europe, it continually reinforces Sotogrande’s reputation as the world capital of summer polo.

High Handicap Final Victory

In an exhilarating High Handicap final, Amanara demonstrated strategic prowess and resilience. The team comprised stars such as Nicky Sen (replaced in the final by Mati Romualdez), Lorenzo Chavanne, Beltrán Laulhé, and standout Barto Castagnola.

 

Castagnola was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) and received the Best Pony Prize (BPP) for his mare “Tole Bombay.”

 

The match kept spectators on the edge, with Amanara’s solid gameplay ultimately sealing their victory. The team’s display of skill and teamwork cemented their place in polo history at this prestigious tournament.

More Winners

The Medium Handicap category saw the Brunei Polo Team edge out Electric Polo with an 11-10 victory in a tense showdown. Participants Azemah Bolkiah, Custodio Eleno, Rosendo Torreguitar, and Matías Mac Donough Jr. brought high energy to the field, with Mac Donough earning MVP honors. Eleno stepped forward as Best Pony winner with “Irenita Narración,” and Bolkiah secured the Fair Play award.

 

Meanwhile, in Low Handicap competition, Calatagan triumphed over La Capilla, 12-8. Ciro Urturi was named MVP, with “Open Zelda,” ridden by Santiago Irastorza, taking the Best Pony award. The Fair Play accolade in this division was awarded to Guy Charloux.

Looking Ahead: The Gold Cup

With the Silver Cup concluded, excitement shifts to the upcoming Gold Cup, scheduled from August 18 to 30. The tournament features three main competitions: the Bionesta Bronze Cup, Silver Cup, and the eagerly anticipated Gold Cup, attracting 21 teams across all categories.

 

The Gold Cup represents the pinnacle of the 54th Sotogrande International Polo Tournament, offering the highest level of competition and attracting the sport’s elite. Held at the luxurious Ayala Polo Club in Sotogrande, this event continues to showcase Spain’s rich polo heritage, blending tradition, sport, and opulence in a spectacular setting.
