Sierra Blanca Estates has unveiled its ambitious plans for a new residential quarter in the heart of Málaga, Spain — a project that promises to redefine the city’s coastal skyline.

 

Designed in collaboration with Zaha Hadid Architects, a new development will rise in the El Bulto district, an area historically tied to the city’s industrial past but now earmarked for cultural and residential revitalization.

 

Located along the Mediterranean shoreline in the capital of Andalucía, this new community aims to respond to Málaga’s increasing demand for modern housing while enhancing its urban character.

The centerpiece of the initiative is a striking 21-storey residential tower envisioned by Zaha Hadid Architects, bringing their signature fluid geometries and architectural dynamism to southern Spain. 

 

The building will accommodate 153 high-end residences alongside 80 subsidized homes (VPO) reserved for long-standing members of the El Bulto community.

 

The broader master plan integrates landscaped public plazas, lush gardens, sheltered courtyards, and recreational amenities, ensuring the neighborhood offers both vibrancy and livability.

The scheme also includes the preservation and relocation of important heritage sites, such as the historic Cottolengo Diocesan Residence, seamlessly blending the old with the new.

 

Situated next to Málaga’s port railway line, El Bulto is being reimagined as part of a comprehensive Andalusian urban initiative that prioritizes shared public spaces and community-focused design.

Málaga’s Architectural Renaissance

In the hands of Zaha Hadid Architects, the tower will serve as both a residential hub and an architectural landmark, incorporating sustainable strategies developed by a dedicated team led by Carlos Bausa Martinez, with Patrik Schumacher and project lead Manuela Gatto steering the creative vision.

 

The project aligns Málaga with other global architectural milestones, from Safdie Architects’ expansion of Marina Bay Sands in Singapore to MVRDV’s adaptive reuse of an industrial site in Shanghai, and Foster + Partners’ Central Crossing in Hong Kong.

In Europe, transformative projects such as Populous’ redevelopment of Lisbon’s Estádio da Luz and Carlo Ratti Associati’s logistics hub in Alessandria signal a broader movement toward cities that merge innovation, heritage, and livability — a philosophy clearly reflected in Málaga’s newest architectural statement.
