From July 21 to July 27, all eyes in the golf world are on Blaine, Minnesota, as the 2025 3M Open unfolds at TPC Twin Cities.


Among the star-studded field, the spotlight will shine brightest on Venezuela’s Jhonattan Vegas, who returns as the defending champion. After an inspiring comeback victory in 2024, Vegas will attempt to become the first back-to-back winner in the history of the 3M Open.


Vegas’ 2024 triumph was more than just a win — it was a story of resilience and determination. Coming off an injury-plagued stretch, Vegas clinched his first PGA TOUR victory in seven years by sinking a dramatic three-foot birdie on the 72nd hole, edging out rookie Max Greyserman by a single stroke.

The win marked his fourth PGA TOUR title and his first since 2017, reigniting a career that began with dreams forged thousands of miles away from Minnesota’s fairways.

Jhonattan Vegas: Four PGA Tour events

Born in Maturín, Venezuela, in 1984, Jhonattan Vegas made a bold leap at the age of 17, moving to the United States with little more than a bag of golf clubs, a few clothes, and a vocabulary of ten English words.


Despite the odds, Vegas quickly made his mark. He turned professional in 2008 and found early success by winning on the Nationwide Tour in 2010. Just a year later, he won his first PGA TOUR event at the Bob Hope Classic in 2011.

Vegas continued to rise with back-to-back victories at the RBC Canadian Open in 2016 and 2017.

 

However, injuries and inconsistent play saw him fade from the spotlight—until his stirring return at the 2024 3M Open, where he recaptured his form and reminded fans and fellow pros alike of his elite talent and grit.

Fierce competition

Currently ranked 56th in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), Vegas enters the 2025 3M Open as one of the week’s most compelling figures.

 

The par-72, 7,164-yard course at TPC Twin Cities, co-designed by Arnold Palmer and Minnesota’s own Tom Lehman, is known for rewarding aggressive play and strategic shot-making—attributes Vegas showcased masterfully during his 2024 run.


This year’s tournament promises fierce competition. Tournament officials have confirmed commitments from top-tier names including Max Homa, Wyndham Clark, Sam Burns, and 2022 champion Tony Finau, who has finished in the top 10 three times in four starts at TPC Twin Cities. Rising stars like Maverick McNealy (currently ranked 16th OWGR), Akshay Bhatia, and Tom Kim also bolster a deep and talented field.

In total, the 2025 3M Open will feature 30 of the top 80 players in the OWGR and 42 PGA TOUR winners from the past two seasons.

 

Adding to the excitement, the field will include emerging talent such as NCAA Individual Champion Michael LaSasso and PGA TOUR University standouts David Ford and Brendan Valdes, both of whom have accepted sponsor exemptions.


Beyond the competition, fans attending the tournament can also enjoy special events, including the popular “Swings and Strings” concert on Saturday, July 26, featuring multi-platinum country star Lee Brice.
