Red Bull and Max Verstappen emerged as the undeniable winners at Imola, both in execution and decisions. From the race start to the perfectly timed call to delay his first pit stop, Verstappen demonstrated complete control. Although he benefited from an early virtual safety car, which allowed him to change tires with minimal loss, the most crucial choices had already been made in his favor.

On the other side of the strategy spectrum was the pole-sitter, whose lead vanished right off the line. Oscar Piastri and his McLaren team opted for an early tire change, aiming for a two-stop plan, but this backfired dramatically as both safety car interventions disrupted their timing and destroyed their initial setup.

While Verstappen pulled away with a clean and commanding race at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, McLaren faltered in their tactical choices. This opened the door for Lando Norris, who smartly mirrored Verstappen’s decisions and overtook his teammate, securing second place and strengthening his position in the championship battle.

Tactical triumph

The high temperatures added another layer of complexity, leaving engineers and drivers uncertain about tire degradation throughout the race. This uncertainty impacted Piastri’s final result, further worsened by Verstappen’s audacious overtake during the opening braking zone.

Lewis Hamilton delivered a standout performance, charging from a frustrating qualifying session to secure fourth place. Choosing to start on hard tires, he made the most of race interruptions to climb steadily through the field.

Just behind him, Alexander Albon executed a long first stint before his stop, flirting with a podium finish before settling into fifth—outperforming his teammate Carlos Sainz in identical machinery.

Classic chaos

Charles Leclerc claimed sixth ahead of George Russell, while Sainz ended up eighth. Once again, strategic errors hampered the Spaniard, as he was brought in far too early, costing him potential positions. Meanwhile, Albon, with a near-identical car, managed to cross the line comfortably in fifth.

Although Aston Martin’s upgrades showed promise, their pace in race conditions still lacked punch. Fernando Alonso, in particular, suffered from unfortunate timing—he passed the pit entrance just before the second safety car, forcing him to complete another full lap before making his tire change.

Had the caution come slightly earlier, he might have scored points. Still, the team’s strong one-lap pace offers hope for next week’s Monaco Grand Prix, where Alonso will aim for a podium finish.

With the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix now behind them, teams will carry both confidence and lessons forward as the season continues to unfold.
