While much of the attention in Northern Italy is drawn toward the more popular Lake Como or Lake Maggiore, a quieter, more enchanting destination lies just an hour from Milan—Lake Orta.

Tucked into the hillside above the historic town of Orta San Giulio, La Darbia Hotel stands as a refined haven for those who appreciate the beauty of discretion.

At first glance, La Darbia Hotel may seem like a simple rural settlement, but what lies within its stone walls is a masterclass in quiet luxury.

Surrounded by meticulously landscaped Mediterranean gardens, thoughtfully designed by Anna Regge, and nestled among Nebbiolo vineyards, the property offers an immersive experience in elegance and tranquility.

With unobstructed views of the shimmering lake and the soaring peaks of Monte Rosa, guests find themselves at the intersection of nature, architecture, and culture.

A Designer’s Dream Turned Sanctuary

The transformation of La Darbia from an abandoned hamlet to a modern boutique hotel was the vision of architect brothers Gian Carlo and Matteo Primatesta of Studio Primatesta

Without any formal background in hospitality, they embraced their passion for beauty and detail to create a place that not only looks exquisite but feels meaningful.

Their inexperience became their advantage—each design decision was made not for commercial conformity but to create a truly personal and soulful space.

The architectural concept is rooted in the vernacular of Piedmont’s rural structures, combining natural materials like stone and wood with a minimal, honest aesthetic.

The 20 suite-apartments of La Darbia Hotel radiate subtle elegance, drawing from the soft color palette of the surrounding landscape.

Ivy-covered walls and forest-facing facades create an atmosphere of privacy, while each suite opens into the gardens, overlooking the vineyards and a heated saltwater pool.

Gastronomy with a View: “La Cucina”

A stay at La Darbia Hotel would not be complete without a culinary journey at its on-site restaurant, La Cucina.

Chef Matteo Monfrinotti leads the gastronomic experience, emphasizing seasonal and regional ingredients in dishes that celebrate Piedmont’s culinary heritage.

Guests dine on a terrace that opens to the lake, surrounded by a thriving organic vegetable garden, where ingredients are harvested daily.

“La Cucina” is not just about food—it’s about storytelling through flavor, place, and memory.

With a zero-kilometer philosophy and deep collaboration with local producers and artisans, every meal tells the story of the land.

Even the cocktail bar, nestled in the garden, becomes a stage for leisurely indulgence under the Italian sky.

More Than a Stay—An Experience

Beyond the accommodations and cuisine, La Darbia Hotel offers a lifestyle. Each morning, guests are treated to an artisanal breakfast delivered to their suite, enjoyed in the garden with birdsong and lake breeze.

The wine cellar now hosts intimate gourmet events and tastings. Yoga on the panoramic sun deck adds a meditative rhythm to the day, as Monte Rosa looms in the distance like a silent guardian.

The concept of sustainability is woven throughout the property: original building elements have been repurposed, zero-waste practices are observed, and local craftspeople were involved in every step of construction and design.

It’s a sanctuary built not just for relaxation, but with intention, love, and a deep respect for its surroundings.

La Darbia Hotel isn’t a destination for everyone—and that’s the point. With just 20 suites, it remains an intimate, exclusive escape for discerning travelers.
