Capitalizing on an early shuffle involving teammate Lando Norris and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, Oscar Piastri managed to seize the lead and maintain control for the remainder of the race. Although Norris lost ground early after a fierce duel with Verstappen off the line, the Australian driver used that opening to pull ahead and secure his fourth win of the season.

The gap between the two McLaren drivers at the checkered flag was 4.4 seconds, cementing Piastri’s position at the top of the standings, now 16 points ahead of Norris. Together, they finished a full 30 seconds ahead of the rest of the field, making McLaren’s form undeniable.

The real battle behind them centered around the final podium spot. Despite fighting hard in the early stages, Max Verstappen lost third place to George Russell due to an unfortunately timed Virtual Safety Car.

Battle in the bay

Russell, who started on hard compounds and switched to mediums later, executed a well-timed alternative strategy to perfection, climbing to his fourth podium finish of the year. Verstappen had to settle for fourth place but retains third overall in the championship.

Williams had a strong showing in Miami, with Alex Albon crossing the line in fifth thanks to impressive race pace and strategic execution. Carlos Sainz also scored points, ending up ninth after a scrappy and tactical battle with the Ferraris. Ferrari’s internal dynamics came into play, with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc engaging in position swaps late in the race.

Initially, Hamilton was favored with team orders, only to give the spot back to Leclerc on the final lap, triggering tension over the radio. Hamilton, ever the competitor, sarcastically asked if he needed to yield to Sainz as well, after narrowly avoiding contact with the Spaniard in the closing moments.

Miami momentum

Andrea Kimi Antonelli impressed once again, finishing sixth ahead of Hamilton and Leclerc, while Yuki Tsunoda completed the points-scoring positions in tenth place. Despite receiving a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane, he managed to stay just ahead of Isack Hadjar to retain his spot.

At the back of the pack, Aston Martin had a race to forget. Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll finished 15th and 16th respectively—last among classified drivers. Alonso spun in the early stages but ultimately ended ahead of his teammate.

The Miami Grand Prix 2025 brought plenty of drama, strategy, and intra-team rivalries, especially within Ferrari and McLaren. As the championship heats up, all eyes now turn to Imola for the upcoming Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. With McLaren’s current pace, the rest of the field will need to regroup quickly if they hope to catch up.
