Nick Abrams, Accessories Designer at Rolls-Royce, explained that the set was inspired by the deep relationships the brand has with its discerning clientele. These personal insights — gathered over years of dialogue — revealed a shared appreciation for chess among many owners.
As a result, the design team envisioned the Rolls-Royce Chess Set not merely as a game, but as a meaningful extension of the luxury lifestyle their clients embrace. Drawing from the same materials, finishes, and intricate craftsmanship found in Rolls-Royce vehicles, this chess set is both a functional heirloom and a sculptural piece of art.
Every feature of the set is engineered with purpose. The raised leather board, which subtly mimics motion, conceals embedded magnets beneath the surface to keep pieces firmly in place without interrupting smooth gameplay. Multiple testing phases were conducted to achieve the perfect magnet strength, balancing precision with ease of movement. Two discreet drawers built into the board hold spare queens for pawn promotion, a nod to thoughtful, elevated design.
