Extended & Exalted: Warhol’s Triple Elvis Takes Over Naples (Again)

The Naples exhibition of Andy Warhol’s ‘Triple Elvis’ has been extended until 4 May 2025, offering a rare deep dive into Pop Art iconography.

Initially set to close in February 2025, Gallerie d’Italia – Naples has extended the acclaimed Andy Warhol. Triple Elvis exhibition to 4 May 2025, giving art lovers an additional three months to experience one of Pop Art’s most iconic bodies of work.

Curated by Luca Massimo Barbero, the show is part of the Vitalità del Tempo series, and spotlights Warhol’s creative revolution through masterpieces sourced from the Luigi and Giuseppe Agrati Collection.

At its core is the monumental Triple Elvis, created in 1963 during a breakthrough year in Warhol’s career, alongside other iconic works like Marilyn (1967), Electric Chair (1964), and Mao Tse Tung (1972).

The extended dates reflect both the exhibition’s public success and the international appeal of Warhol’s enduring legacy.

What Will Visitors Discover in the Exhibition?

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by two of Warhol’s monumental wallpaper installations, leading into the striking Electric Chair series—ten silkscreen paintings that reflect Warhol’s fascination with media, repetition, and mortality. On the opposite side: Warhol’s 1972 portraits of Mao Tse Tung, presented in dialogue with the socio-political tensions of the Cold War era.

The exhibition’s emotional centerpiece is Triple Elvis, a work that captures the mythos of Elvis Presley through cinematic repetition and graphic boldness. Nearby, Warhol’s portraits of Marilyn Monroe radiate with vibrant color and melancholic undertones, epitomizing the artist’s obsession with fame and fragility.

Also on view is a quietly intimate photographic portrait of Warhol by Duane Michals, where the artist’s face fades across three frames, hinting at both identity and impermanence.

How Is Warhol Connected to Naples?

Though born in Pittsburgh, Warhol had a lasting relationship with Naples, thanks in part to his friendship with legendary art dealer Lucio Amelio.

A highlight of the show is a group of lithographs of Mount Vesuvius, painted by Warhol and now part of Intesa Sanpaolo’s collection, which reference both the city’s explosive energy and Warhol’s fascination with catastrophe.

By including works linked directly to Naples, the exhibition bridges global Pop Art with local cultural memory, grounding Warhol’s fame in a space that once inspired him.
