Bernie Ecclestone journey began far from the luxury circuits and sponsorship deals. Born on October 28, 1930, to Sidney and Bertha Ecclestone, he was raised in modest surroundings of Bexleyheath, UK. His father worked as a fisherman, and his mother stayed at home, reflecting the humble beginnings from which his empire would rise.

Long before he revolutionized the sport’s structure, Bernard Ecclestone was behind the wheel himself. In the early 1950s, he entered the world of Formula 3, even co-founding the Compton & Ecclestone team. However, a crash in 1951 at Brands Hatch abruptly ended his driving career.

That moment shifted his path, pushing him toward team management and driver representation. Among the notable talents he managed were Stuart Lewis-Evans and Jochen Rindt, the latter becoming Formula 1 World Champion in 1970.

From pit lane to power

Despite his growing interest in motorsport, Ecclestone also explored other business avenues. He made strategic investments in real estate and auctions, accumulating both wealth and an influential network. But his defining impact on Formula 1 began in 1972, when he purchased the Brabham team for £100,000. Within a decade, Brabham secured two world titles, in 1981 and 1983, with Brazilian driver Nelson Piquet.

That same year, Bernard Ecclestone co-founded the Formula One Constructors Association (FOCA) alongside other team owners. This marked a pivotal moment in the sport’s commercial development. FOCA challenged the FIA’s control over television rights and commercial revenues, with Ecclestone at the forefront of negotiations.

His efforts culminated in the creation of the Formula One Promotions and Administration (FOPA) in 1981, which later evolved into Formula One Management (FOM). Through this structure, Ecclestone centralized the control of the race organization, sponsorship, and media rights.
