This exclusive reissue by Poltrona Frau of the iconic Dezza armchair features a previously unpublished illustration by the late architect, celebrating his timeless influence on modern design.

As one of the most important figures in Italian post-war architecture and design, Ponti made an enduring impact across various disciplines, from ceramics and product design to large-scale architecture.

His artistic journey evolved from Art Deco and classical inspirations to the embrace of Rationalism and the Modern Movement. Among his most renowned works, Ponti was responsible for designing Milan’s iconic Pirelli skyscraper and played a crucial role in shaping the prestigious Compasso d’Oro design award.

The Dezza armchair, a true reflection of his vision, balances modernist rigidity with inviting softness. A defining feature is the curved silhouette that begins at the armrests and seamlessly extends to the legs, creating a fluid and harmonious structure.

From Milan to Tolentino

The upholstery of this special edition showcases 26 uniquely designed hands, each symbolic and expressive, embodying the whimsical yet functional essence of Ponti’s artistic approach.

In the 1920s, Ponti introduced the ceramic hand, a symbolic and decorative object that defied conventional ceramic forms. Produced by Richard Ginori, this artistic creation broke away from traditional utilitarian shapes.

The designer’s fascination with hands continued throughout his career, with at least 26 variations appearing in different forms. These symbolic hand illustrations now adorn the limited-edition Dezza armchair, reinforcing its connection to Ponti’s artistic legacy.

Originally introduced in 1965, the Dezza armchair was among the first designs to mark Poltrona Frau’s new creative direction after relocating to Tolentino in 1962. The upholstery of this reimagined edition is crafted from Pelle Frau ColorSphere Impact Less leather, featuring a refined color palette of Panna and Iris. These hues pay homage to the vibrant interiors of the Hotel Parco dei Principi in Sorrento—one of Ponti’s most celebrated masterpieces.

60 years of Dezza

To honor six decades of the Dezza armchair, Poltrona Frau is releasing this exclusive version in a limited series of only 60 numbered pieces. Each chair is distinguished not only by its unique hand-patterned upholstery but also by an engraved metal plaque placed on the back, signifying its place in the collection. The Dezza Limited Edition armchairs are available for order through Poltrona Frau’s official webstore until April 1, 2025.
