Reimagining Utility: Haider Ackermann’s Take on Canada Goose

While working on his first collection for Canada Goose, Colombian designer Haider Ackermann came across an image in the brand’s archives that stopped him in his tracks.

For the debut capsule of Snow Goose—the new heritage sub-label created by Haider Ackermann for one of the world’s leading high-performance outerwear brands, based in Toronto—there is a tribute to that piece: a lightweight, waterproof pink jacket, albeit in a slightly softer shade.

It was a photograph of Canadian mountaineer Laurie Skreslet, who climbed Everest in the 1980s wearing a fluorescent pink parka.

“It’s so beautiful,” says Ackermann. “The story goes that Canada Goose had to make him a coat, so they asked his daughter, who was around five years old: ‘What color should it be?’ And she said pink.”

In fact, the entire collection bursts with vibrant hues: pastel purple, electric blue, chartreuse, lemon yellow, emerald green, and mocha brown.

A Surprising Appointment

The announcement last May that Haider Ackermann would become Canada Goose’s first-ever creative director surprised the fashion world.

At 53, Ackermann has built a reputation as one of the industry’s most romantic visionaries, thanks to his acclaimed eponymous label, a three-year tenure at Berluti, and iconic red carpet designs for celebrities like Tilda Swinton and Timothée Chalamet.

Canada Goose, on the other hand, is best known for its technical, frost-resistant utility parkas. On paper, the gap between them seemed vast.

A New Chapter with Snow Goose

Under Ackermann’s direction, Snow Goose will operate separately from Canada Goose’s main line and has its own distinct logo—a flowing stroke reminiscent of a bird in flight.

Ackermann personally chose the name, which Canada Goose originally used in the 1970s, because he liked its connection to the environment, its peaceful energy, and its historical ties to the brand.

This marks a radical shift for Canada Goose, a brand founded in Toronto in 1957 as Metro Sportswear Ltd., which remains a family business today.

In its early years, the company was primarily known for outfitting mountaineers and explorers.

While Canada Goose had already cemented its place in the world of performance and lifestyle fashion, Haider Ackermann’s arrival adds a touch of high fashion allure, allowing the brand to better compete with luxury names like Moncler.

Fashion Meets Functionality

“This is a significant moment for Canada Goose,” says Dani Reiss, the brand’s president and CEO, and grandson of its founders.

That idea of evolution over reinvention is key. In other words, there’s no grand plan to turn Canada Goose into the next Balenciaga.

“Canada Goose isn’t a fashion brand,” Reiss states.

“What we are is a timeless brand, built on a solid foundation of functionality, craftsmanship, and style. We create real products with a purpose—to be functional.”

A New Perspective on Outdoor Wear

Ackermann’s influence brings a new fashion-forward dimension to the brand, as seen in the debut Snow Goose campaign.

The images showcase a diverse cast, led by a fierce-looking Ethan Hawke, wearing the collection against stunning natural landscapes.

What stands out most is how, with just a zipper adjustment or a cinched waist drawstring, the brand’s iconic parkas transform into silhouettes worthy of the runway.

This is where the brand and its new designer find common ground: a shared love for travel and an appreciation for nature.

Haider Ackermann seeks beauty in the world, while Canada Goose wants to dress you for the journey.
