The Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz emerged victorious on Sunday at the Rotterdam Open in the Netherlands, an ATP 500 tournament played on hard courts. His triumph over Alex de Minaur not only marks his first title of the year but also represents a significant milestone—his first championship on an indoor surface. In doing so, Alcaraz continues to build an impressive legacy, now boasting titles on every surface at the ATP 500 level.

In a match that lasted an hour and 53 minutes, the world No. 3 and top seed in Rotterdam navigated tense moments on his way to his 17th career ATP title, surpassing his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, who had won 16 during his career.

Moreover, this victory sets Alcaraz apart as the first Spaniard to lift the trophy in Rotterdam. Previously, fellow Spaniards had fallen short in the final—Ferrero in 2004 against Lleyton Hewitt and Rafael Nadal in 2009 against Andy Murray.

First spaniard to win Rotterdam title

To make history in the Dutch tournament, Alcaraz had to overcome De Minaur, whom he had previously defeated in their two prior encounters. The Spaniard took control early, breaking his opponent’s serve in the third game to go up 3-1. Although the Australian responded with a break of his own in the seventh game (4-4), Alcaraz immediately struck back with a crucial break, allowing him to seal the first set with an impressive 73% success rate on his first serve.

However, De Minaur showed resilience in the second set, starting aggressively and breaking Alcaraz early to take a 3-0 lead. The Australian maintained his momentum, leveling the match and forcing a decisive third set, where both players took a more strategic approach.

The final set saw Alcaraz elevate his game. While De Minaur managed to fend off an early break point in the second game, he couldn’t stop the Spaniard’s surge from 3-2 onward. Alcaraz claimed four consecutive games to seal the victory, securing the title and solidifying his status as one of the most successful active players on the ATP Tour.

Road to glory

With 17 trophies, he now trails only Novak Djokovic (99), Alexander Zverev (23), Marin Cilic (21), Daniil Medvedev (20), and Jannik Sinner (19) among active players.

Reflecting on his triumph in the post-match press conference, Alcaraz shared: “This title is special because it’s my first on an indoor court, and I’ve proven to myself that I can perform well in these conditions. I stayed focused throughout the match—even after losing the second set, I remained strong in the third. I felt some pressure, but I handled it very well.”
