The Louvre, the most renowned museum, showcases its collection of classical art alongside creations from the world’s most celebrated fashion designers and emerging talents.

Attention, haute couture enthusiasts: the Louvre is stepping into the world of fashion! From January 24 to July 21, 2025, the museum transforms its traditionally classical ambiance into a grand fashion spectacle with “Louvre Couture: Art Objects, Fashion Objects.”.

This extraordinary exhibition unveils an imaginative wardrobe, rolling out the red carpet for fashion by merging high couture with historical masterpieces. A truly tailor-made experience.

Spanning 9,000 square meters, the Louvre invites visitors on a journey through a fashion show—or rather, an artistic promenade—where silhouettes from legendary designers seamlessly blend with treasures from the museum’s Department of Decorative Arts.

Intersection of high art and high fashion

A hundred iconic creations, garments, and accessories, generously loaned by 45 distinguished fashion houses—including Cristóbal Balenciaga, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, Yohji Yamamoto, and Iris van Herpen—have been displayed alongside decorative art pieces that have long served as inspiration for designers.

From an ancient bas-relief to a grandiose tapestry or an 18th-century commode, art reveals its finest materials and techniques, subtly reinterpreted through contemporary haute couture. A Boulle-style cabinet may inspire intricate embroidery on a tailored suit, while the structure of an antique suit of armor is transformed into the silhouette of a dress.

There is no set itinerary here—just an open invitation to explore. Visitors drift through different eras, guided by their own inspiration. The journey begins in Byzantium and the Middle Ages, where the most exquisite artifacts—gold, ivory, and gemstones—find their echoes in breathtaking haute couture pieces, displayed proudly on mirrored platforms that turn the museum’s galleries into an avant-garde runway.

Fashion into art history

The Renaissance rooms present a striking dialogue between majestic tapestries, enameled ceramics, and finely crafted armor, harmoniously juxtaposed with innovative fashion designs.

Although the Louvre does not house a dedicated fashion collection—aside from a few historic garments, such as the coats of the Order of the Holy Spirit—its galleries are brimming with textile inspiration.

Designers recognize this, viewing the museum as an open-air atelier, an expansive mood board where every detail offers a potential spark for creation. The Louvre Couture exhibition passionately explores this wealth of artistic and sartorial influence.

The connection between haute couture and cultural heritage is nothing new. Visionaries like Jacques Doucet and Marie-Louise Carven—who once donated an 18th-century decorative arts collection to the Louvre—helped establish this tradition of artistic dialogue. Even today, designers continue to revive ancient craftsmanship, weaving together historical influences with modern fashion innovation.

With Louvre Couture, the museum not only celebrates the artistry of fashion but also honors the centuries-old interplay between cultural history and contemporary creativity, proving that fashion, much like art, is timeless.
