Winter Wonderland at Apollo Theater

Opened in 1913 as a burlesque venue, the iconic Apollo Theater became a cultural beacon during segregation in the United States.

While many theaters limited access to white patrons and performers, the Apollo was the first in New York to welcome African Americans both as audience members and performers. This inclusion helped genres like jazz, swing, bebop, R&B, gospel, blues, and soul thrive among diverse audiences.

Legendary artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, James Brown, and Lauryn Hill began their careers here, while icons like Michael Jackson and Prince also graced its stage, earning a spot on the Apollo Theater Walk of Fame. Today, the Apollo continues to champion Black American performers and remains Harlem’s premier venue for live entertainment.
