Alteronce Gumby is an artist known for his cosmic-inspired and colorful works, which have been showcased in countless solo and group exhibitions. This time, though, he brought his colors to the Miami Design District, where he unveiled his largest outdoor public project.

Gumby‘s “Living the Dream” mural in Jade Alley shows his understanding of geology, art history, and interest in astrophysics. It’s a brilliant work that captures the colors of the universe and invites viewers to step out of their digital lives and appreciate the world around them.

The colorful mural mixes precious stones like green jade, turquoise, and red jasper with more conventional materials like glass and tiles, as well as some less conventional ones like fossilized shark teeth. He teamed up with Apperlo Art and got support from DACRA, chaired by Craig Robins, to make this happen.

Gumby graduated from the Yale School of Art with an MFA in Painting and Printmaking in 2016. He’s also won other awards, including the Austrian American Foundation/Seebacher Prize for Fine Arts and the Robert Reed Memorial Scholarship.

Living the Dream is not only his largest outdoor work, but it’ll also be a permanent exhibit, adding even more color to the Miami Design District spaces. Gumby brings together gems, ceramics, and fossils in a bold, colorful fusion reminiscent of Fauvism.

The work builds on Gumby’s ongoing exploration of color and cosmic themes, as seen in his previous works, such as Vertigo Colors, which were inspired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Vertigo of Color exhibition.
