Lando Norris showcased his skill and composure to secure a hard-fought victory at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, capping off one of Formula One’s most thrilling seasons and clinching McLaren’s first constructors’ championship title since 1998.

Starting from pole position, Lando Norris delivered a flawless performance to claim his fourth win of the year, holding off Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc in a dramatic season finale at Yas Marina Circuit.

McLaren entered the weekend with a 21-point lead over Ferrari, but the Grand Prix quickly turned tense. On the opening lap, Oscar Piastri, who had qualified second alongside Norris, collided with newly crowned drivers’ champion Max Verstappen. The incident sent Piastri tumbling to the back of the field, while Verstappen incurred a 10-second penalty for causing the crash. This left Norris as McLaren’s lone frontrunner, maintaining a cool demeanor as he held onto his lead.

Ferrari capitalized on the chaos, with Sainz skillfully maneuvering into second after avoiding the Piastri-Verstappen clash. Meanwhile, Leclerc, who started from 19th due to a grid penalty, mounted an impressive charge through the field to secure third place, completing the podium.

Despite Ferrari’s strong showing, McLaren retained their championship lead, finishing the season with 666 points to Ferrari’s 652, while Red Bull settled for third with 589 points.

Piastri’s troubles didn’t end there, as he later received a 10-second penalty for rear-ending Franco Colapinto’s Williams. These setbacks relegated the Australian to a race-long battle for points, though he managed a remarkable recovery to finish 10th in the closing laps.

The midfield action was equally gripping. Mercedes teammates Lewis Hamilton and George Russell finished fourth and fifth, respectively, with Hamilton overtaking Russell on the final lap in what marked his last race for the Silver Arrows before his move to Ferrari next season. Verstappen, hampered by his penalty and the opening-lap incident, crossed the line in sixth, capping off a challenging weekend for the 2024 champion.

Further down the order, Pierre Gasly’s seventh-place finish secured Alpine sixth in the team standings, narrowly ahead of Nico Hülkenberg in eighth for Haas. The result underscored a competitive midfield battle that characterized much of the 2024 season.

As the dust settled on a historic season, McLaren’s resurgence stood out as a defining storyline. Norris’ consistency, paired with Piastri’s flashes of brilliance, propelled the team back to the top of the constructors’ hierarchy after a 26-year drought. Ferrari’s spirited fight and Red Bull’s third-place finish set the stage for a highly anticipated 2025 campaign.

The season finale also marked the beginning of preparations for next year, with post-race testing at Yas Marina offering teams a chance to evaluate new tire compounds for 2025. With the promise of another closely contested season on the horizon, Formula One heads into the offseason buzzing with anticipation.
