Amid the buzz of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Tommy Hilfiger, sipping a glass of Pinot Grigio at an elegant dinner hosted by his namesake brand at the Aria’s Cathédrale restaurant, shared his enthusiasm for the energy surrounding the race. “Race car drivers are the new rock stars,” he declared, referencing the immense attention drawn by F1’s modern stars.

 

Hilfiger’s ties to Formula 1 span over three decades. His journey began in 1991 with Team Lotus, for whom he designed custom uniforms for three seasons. Later, in 1998, he became Ferrari’s official clothing sponsor, a partnership that lasted four years.

Though he briefly stepped away from formal sponsorships, his passion for the sport never wavered—he even learned to drive a Ferrari Enzo on a private track owned by his former business partner, Lawrence Stroll, now the Aston Martin Formula 1 team owner. In 2018, Hilfiger made a celebrated return as a sponsor for Mercedes-AMG.

Tommy Hilfiger partners with F1 academy

As Hilfiger observed the glamorous crowd at the Grand Prix, he noted how the sport has become a cultural melting pot. “The race is packed with people from sports, fashion, Hollywood, and influencers,” he said. “It’s an incredible mix of pop culture icons and devoted fans.” The heightened popularity of Formula 1, thanks in part to global phenomena like Netflix’s Drive to Survive, has amplified its allure, making drivers like George Russell comparable to rock legends like Mick Jagger in Hilfiger’s eyes.

Beyond the glitz, Hilfiger is also committed to fostering inclusivity in motorsports. At The Female Quotient’s panel series during the event, he partnered with the F1 Academy, a junior-level racing championship for women, to announce a landmark initiative: 16-year-old Danish racer Alba Hurup Larsen, dubbed “the fastest girl in the world,” will become the official Tommy Hilfiger driver for the 2025 season. This move underscores his dedication to empowering the next generation of female athletes in motorsports.

The Intersection of glamour and speed

Fashion remained a centerpiece of the weekend, with Hilfiger’s designs prominently showcased. Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton arrived at the track dazzling in a custom Tommy Jeans ensemble featuring head-to-toe sequins.

 

Meanwhile, George Russell and his partner Carmen Montero turned heads in coordinated Tommy Hilfiger outfits on race day—Russell in a sharp pinstripe navy blazer paired with drawstring trousers, and Montero in a vibrant scarlet turtleneck and tailored pants.
