The Special Jury Prize, which rewards a key figure or institution in the world of watchmaking, was attributed this year to the artisan watch case maker Jean-Pierre Hagmann.

The GPHG, created in 2001, recognizes exceptional watchmaking creations of the year and aims to promote the outstanding quality of Swiss watchmaking. The GPHG is also known as the “Oscars” of the Swiss watch industry.

Most distinguished award

The Portugieser Eternal Calendar won the main prize of the GPHG: The Aiguille d’Or. This watch is IWC’s first secular perpetual calendar. An exclusive, newly developed 400-year mechanism ensures that the calendar automatically skips three leap years over four centuries. It also features a moon phase display with unprecedented accuracy: The Double Moon™ phase display will theoretically deviate only one day from the lunar orbit after 45,361,055 years, a world record.

This timepiece features an intricately crafted platinum case, box-shaped sapphire crystals on the front and back, and a transparent crystal dial elegantly displaying the IWC-manufactured 52640 caliber.

The 90 nominated watches, including the 20 winners, are on display at the Musée Rath in Geneva, Switzerland, until November 17. The laureates of this year’s competition will also be presented from November 21 to 23 at the Central University Library in Bucharest.
