Dominant streak: Jannik Sinner’s eight-win run drives ATP Finals dream

On Tuesday, Jannik Sinner claimed his eighth consecutive win by defeating Taylor Fritz with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-4, edging closer to securing a spot in the Nitto ATP Finals semifinals for the second time.

This match would mark Jannik Sinner’s first return to the semi-finals since last year, when he reached the final before losing to Novak Djokovic. Sinner’s form has been impeccable lately, with an impressive eight-match winning streak on the ATP Tour.

Before this tournament, the PIF ATP Rankings World No. 1 hadn’t played since capturing the title at the ATP Masters 1000 in Shanghai. Yet in Turin, Sinner has shown no signs of rust despite his month-long absence from competition. He kicked off his run with a straight-sets win over Alex de Minaur, followed by another straight-sets victory over the formidable Taylor Fritz.

Interestingly, the two met in the US Open final this past September, where Sinner also emerged victorious. The Italian now holds a 3-1 lead in his Lexus ATP Head2Head record against the American, who last managed to beat him in their first encounter at Indian Wells in 2021.

Italian masterclass

Since then, Fritz has struggled to find a way past Sinner, who boasts 17 ATP Tour titles. On Tuesday night, under the lights for Day Three’s final match, Fritz once again couldn’t break through Sinner’s defenses. He didn’t manage a single break point throughout the match.

The tide began to turn in Sinner’s favor when he fended off a break point at 3-3, holding his serve after a 14-minute battle. Though Fritz came close to a break at love-40 in the following game, Sinner ultimately held his ground and broke Fritz’s serve at 5-4, securing the first set after 50 minutes of intense play.

The 23-year-old Italian continued to push back against any sign of a comeback from Fritz, who managed to get to 0/15 or 0/30 on Sinner’s serve in his last three return games. Each time, Sinner responded with crucial aces that allowed him to stay in control.

A streak to remember

The decisive moment came in the tenth game of the second set. Serving to tie the set at 5-5, Fritz took a 30/0 lead but was derailed by a winning shot from Sinner and three unforced errors, ultimately handing the set—and the match—to his Italian opponent.

Out of his current eight-win streak, Sinner has claimed seven of those victories in straight sets, including Tuesday’s win, which he completed in an hour and 40 minutes. This puts him on the brink of a semifinals berth at the Nitto ATP Finals.

Sinner will face Daniil Medvedev on Thursday, fresh off Medvedev’s own straight-sets victory over De Minaur, in a match that will determine his place in the semifinals. Fritz, on the other hand, must secure a win over De Minaur to keep his own chances of advancing alive.
