This victory confirms Iga Swiatek’s words from a few months ago: “Who says women’s tennis is boring?” In a three-hour match filled with intense competition, the American, ranked third in the world, overcame China’s Qinwen Zheng, who dominated much of the encounter.

With a final score of 6-3, 4-6, and 7-6(2), Gauff triumphed in a thrilling final, adding to one of the best rivalries in women’s tennis, alongside Sabalenka and Swiatek.

In her tournament debut, Zheng showed her determination to win from the start, spurred on by an unusually enthusiastic crowd in Riyadh.

Her excellent serve and consistent baseline play made it clear that she would be a challenging opponent.

The exchanges became long and demanding, with both players searching for the winning shot, while the backhand proved to be a key weapon in a match that saw few net approaches, despite Coco’s attempts to change the pace.

However, despite the audience’s excitement, Gauff displayed some critical errors with her backhand, forehand, and serve, even committing a double fault that cost her a break, allowing Zheng to maintain pressure from the baseline with fresh balls.

Though at times Zheng also seemed to falter, her aggressive play allowed her to take the first set.

Gauff Refused to Give Up

With the score in her favor, Qinwen ramped up her intensity, putting Gauff under constant pressure. Just when it seemed the final was over, Coco rallied, leveling the score and capitalizing on Zheng’s errors.

It was a game of ups and downs for the American, who went from having set point to surrendering a crucial break. Nevertheless, she regained her composure on serve and forced the match into a third set.

Each game became unpredictable, maintaining suspense until the last moment. As in the second set, both players balanced the score, although Zheng raised her level during key moments in an attempt to close out the match quickly.

Gauff battled against the odds to make it 5-5 in the third, seizing the moment’s tension.

Both players were just a step away from the trophy, but the tiebreak became inevitable. At that point, Gauff’s experience shone through as she outplayed a Zheng who could not match her earlier form.

After one last attempt by the Chinese player, Coco celebrated her victory as the new champion of the WTA Finals.
