Spanish artist Jaime Hayon brings his unique creative vision to Miami Art Week with Bestial, a solo exhibition at the Mindy Solomon Gallery that unveils a new side of his work.

Known for his vibrant, eclectic style, this showcase features large-scale paintings and sculptures, representing twenty-five years of artistic experimentation.

The collection highlights Hayon’s distinctive approach, where he combines surrealism with intricate craftsmanship, offering the public a fresh perspective into his evolving world of colors and forms.

In Bestial, Hayon invites viewers into a fantastical universe filled with exaggerated, imaginative creatures.

Through this alternate reality, he delves into themes like nature, humanity, and the interplay between the two. His work, characterized by unusual forms and playful symbolism, merges materials and techniques that reflect his multicultural influences.

Among the standout pieces are three hand-blown glass busts crafted in collaboration with Murano artisans, where Hayon’s signature brushstrokes translate into translucent, ethereal faces, blending traditional glasswork with contemporary art.

Hayon describes Bestial as an exploration of humanity’s untamed spirit. “Each creature I’ve created is a piece of that wild, untamed spirit within us, connected to nature and brimming with curiosity,” Hayon explains.

This theme resonates throughout the exhibition as he examines our animal instincts and inherent connection to the natural world. His work pushes the boundaries of imagination, capturing the beauty and complexity of coexisting with nature in unexpected and evocative ways.

The exhibition’s centerpiece is Beast I, a life-sized portrait of surreal creatures that intertwine flora and fauna.

With wild brushstrokes and bursts of color, Hayon creates a vibrant scene where humanoid forms are both familiar and intriguingly strange.

Another focal piece, Walking Punk Bird, is a towering cerulean fiberglass sculpture standing at 170 cm, showcasing Hayon’s skill in combining technical precision with unrestrained creativity. Through works like these, Bestial reveals a bestiary of imaginary beings, representing Hayon’s exploration of the spontaneity that fine art allows.

Anchoring the exhibition is The Castle of Transgressions, a monumental acrylic painting that acts as a window into Hayon’s dreamlike dystopia.

Measuring 250 x 180 cm, the painting features gigantic creatures and ambiguous shadows, highlighting his unique symbolic language. With this exhibition, Hayon broadens his creative reach, inviting audiences to join him on a journey through layers of imagination, craftsmanship, and raw expression.

Jaime Hayon, a Spanish artist and designer, is celebrated for his playful, surreal style that merges art, design, and craftsmanship.

Born in Madrid in 1974, Hayon initially trained in industrial design at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Madrid and later at Fabrica, a creative think tank in Italy founded by Benetton. He rose to fame in the early 2000s, breaking away from the restrained minimalism that dominated design at the time.

Instead, he embraced bold colors, exaggerated forms, and a whimsical approach that blurred the boundaries between art and function.

Hayon’s work is marked by a unique fusion of influences, from Mediterranean culture to Baroque, Art Deco, and pop art.

His creations range from intricate ceramics and glasswork to large-scale furniture and installations, each piece characterized by his signature curvaceous shapes, vivid hues, and a sense of joyful extravagance. His approach often incorporates traditional craftsmanship with modern design, collaborating with iconic brands like Baccarat, Lladró, and Swarovski, as well as artisan workshops in places like Murano.

Much of Hayon’s work draws on the idea of storytelling, inviting viewers into imaginative worlds populated by surreal creatures and playful figures.

His series of Mediterranean Digital Baroque installations and the Green Chicken chair, for instance, exemplify his ability to turn everyday objects into fantastical creations. His exhibitions, such as Funtastico and Beast Factory, showcase this inventiveness, with his Miami Art Week show, Bestial, marking yet another exploration of these themes.
