Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the third round of the 2024 Paris Masters after a solid victory over Nicolás Jarry.

The Italian player was unable to participate in the tournament due to a virus, which opens up an opportunity for Alcaraz in the competition.

The young Spanish tennis player kicked off his campaign with an impressive second-round win over the Chilean Jarry, achieving a score of 7-5, 6-1 in a match where he committed only six unforced errors and delivered 13 winning shots.

“It’s hard to compare your tennis year by year, but I’m in a much better mental state,” Alcaraz shared in a press conference. He also expressed his desire to reach his highest level at this stage of the season and his motivation to win the tournament: “Last year, the court was probably slower, but it’s difficult to compare.”

Alcaraz expressed regret over Sinner’s absence: “It’s never good news when the best player in the world withdraws from a tournament. Although I wouldn’t meet him until the final, I like seeing him play as a tennis fan.”

Additionally, with the defending champion Novak Djokovic out, Alcaraz’s chances of clinching his fifth title this year have risen, adding another trophy to his wins at the French Open and Wimbledon.

In other results, Briton Jack Draper defeated Czech Jiri Lehecka 7-5, 6-2, while 13th-seeded Dane Holger Rune triumphed over Italian Matteo Arnaldi 6-4, 6-4.

Australian Alex de Minaur, seeded ninth, defeated Mariano Navone 7-5, 6-1, and American Alex Michelsen outperformed Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, the 12th seed, with a score of 6-1, 6-3.

The tournament also saw other seeded players fall. Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo knocked out Russia’s Andrey Rublev, the sixth seed, in a hard-fought match that ended 7-6(6), 7-6(5), and Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard eliminated 14th seed Frances Tiafoe, winning 6-7(5), 7-6(4), 6-3.

In the day’s final matches, Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, seeded tenth, comfortably defeated Alejandro Tabilo 6-3, 6-4, while Australian Jordan Thompson bested seventh-seeded Casper Ruud 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4.
