World No. 1 Jannik Sinner faced a tough three-set match against Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry at the Shanghai Masters, but the Italian eventually prevailed to reach the round of 16 with a 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 victory.

Sinner, playing under the comfort of the closed roof, will have to wait to discover his next opponent, as outdoor matches were postponed due to poor weather conditions.

With this victory, Sinner extended his flawless record against players ranked outside the world’s top 20 to an impressive 43-0. However, the win didn’t come easily, as Etcheverry pushed him to his limits. Sinner began the match strongly, winning the opening game on his serve in just two minutes. But Etcheverry quickly responded, establishing a 40-0 lead in his first service game to signal that he was ready for a fight.

In the end, Sinner closed out the match in commanding fashion, winning all five points in the final game to seal his spot in the next round. Despite the challenge, Sinner once again demonstrated why he is currently at the top of the world rankings.

Medvedev in complications

Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev is going through a rough patch, which was evident in his third-round match against Matteo Arnaldi at the Shanghai Masters 2024. The Russian was dangerously close to being eliminated, not just due to Arnaldi’s strong performance, but also because of his own frustrations. Medvedev’s irritation led to unsportsmanlike behavior toward the umpire, almost risking disqualification.

However, he managed to regain his focus and secured a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory. He now awaits the winner of the match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexandre Müller in the next stage of the tournament.

Amazing from Alcaraz

On the other hand, Carlos Alcaraz continues to deliver exceptional performances during his Asian tour. He faced a tough challenge from China’s Yibing Wu, who played at a remarkably high level, nearly stealing the first set from Alcaraz.

Had Wu been able to maintain his early momentum, the outcome of the match might have been different. Despite this, Alcaraz managed to secure his place in the next round of the ATP Shanghai 2024, winning crucial points at decisive moments.

Alcaraz, sporting a freshly shaved look, once again showcased the same focus and strategic patience that has defined his performance throughout the tour. He constructed points with care and remained composed, even as Wu continuously tried to seize control from the first shot. Wu, for his part, proved that he has the potential to climb back into the top 100 and become a regular on the main circuit, provided he stays injury-free.

In the end, Alcaraz’s high level of play proved too much for Wu, although the match was far from easy. If Alcaraz had been anything less than outstanding, the Spaniard might have faced a much tougher battle to advance.
