Earlier in the day, Team World’s Frances Tiafoe mounted a dramatic comeback, overturning a set deficit to beat Daniil Medvedev, bringing the match to a tie. However, Carlos Alcaraz, representing Team Europe, soon restored parity with an impressive 6-4, 6-4 win over American Ben Shelton.

Alcaraz, who has already claimed titles at the 2023 French Open and Wimbledon, displayed his trademark calmness during high-pressure moments. The young Spaniard successfully saved all five break points he faced throughout the match, neutralizing Shelton’s powerful left-handed serve with precision and breaking his serve once in each set to secure a straight-set victory.

Speaking after his win, Alcaraz expressed his excitement about joining Team Europe for the first time. “I’m really happy to be part of Team Europe,” the world No. 3 said. “I wanted to give my best to help the team. Playing against someone like Shelton, who has a lot of power and a strong game, is tough. But I’m really pleased with how solid my performance was from the very start.”

While Alcaraz’s performance drew praise, Ben Shelton was quick to acknowledge the Spanish sensation’s versatility on the court. “The thing about top players like Carlos is that the better you play, the better they respond,” Shelton remarked. “He’s not just a great offensive player; he can counterpunch, and his footwork is a serious weapon. I felt like I had control of the point at times, but he’d either hit an incredible angle or lob one over my head.”

The match was a pivotal moment in the ongoing battle between the two sides, with Alexander Zverev of Germany and American Taylor Fritz lined up to face each other next. With the contest so finely poised, the outcome of their match and the subsequent doubles encounter would be crucial in determining which team could take the lead heading into the final day of the Laver Cup.

Though many had predicted Team Europe to dominate the event, including commentator Todd Woodbridge, Team World had proven to be a formidable opponent.

Team World takes lead

Their strategic player selection and impressive performances—like Fritz’s recent win over Zverev and Tiafoe’s victory over Medvedev—had allowed them to keep pace with the heavily favored Europeans. As the matches progressed, Team World was steadily building momentum.

By the end of Saturday, Team World held an 8-4 lead, placing them within striking distance of the 13 points needed to clinch the cup. However, the Laver Cup has proven in past editions that no lead is safe. Just last year, Team Europe entered the final day with a four-point advantage, only to see it completely wiped out. Despite this, with Team World needing just five more points to seal the deal, the odds now seemed stacked against Team Europe as they faced a tough final day of competition.
