The road to glory: Davis Cup returns to Manchester’s AO Arena
The Men’s Tennis World Cup returns to Manchester’s AO Arena from September 10-15, as Team Great Britain kicks off their quest for an 11th Davis Cup title.
Where is the Davis Cup Finals held?
The Davis Cup Finals group stages are set to take place in four cities across four different countries: Manchester (Great Britain), Bologna (Italy), Valencia (Spain), and Zhuhai (China). For the second year in a row, Manchester’s AO Arena will be hosting a week of top-tier tennis, from Tuesday, September 10, to Sunday, September 15. Last year, the finals between Great Britain and France attracted a record crowd of 13,000 spectators.
Teams will compete in a round-robin format throughout the week. The top two nations from each group will advance to the Final 8 in Málaga, set for November 19-24. Each tie will consist of three matches, with two singles and one doubles, all played as best-of-three sets with tie-breakers.
Who are the defending champions?
Italy is the reigning Davis Cup champion, claiming their second title in history, thanks to world No.1 Jannik Sinner, along with Lorenzo Musetti, Matteo Arnaldi, Lorenzo Sonego, and Simone Bolelli. The Italian team defeated Australia 2-0 in the 2023 final. This year, Italy is aiming to become the first team since the Czech Republic (2012-2013) to defend their title successfully.
However, in Group A, Italy will compete without Sinner, who is opting for a break after his recent US Open victory. The team, led by Matteo Berrettini, will face Brazil first on their home courts in Bologna at the Unipol Arena.
Key teams and matchups
Spain, the host of Group B, will face Czechia on September 11. While Spain boasts local favorite Carlos Alcaraz, Australia is another strong contender for the title, led by Alexei Popyrin, who recently won the ATP Masters in Montreal, where he also knocked out Rublev.
Meanwhile, Group C’s campaign will take place in China. The USA and Germany are missing key players—Team USA’s Taylor Fritz, a US Open finalist, and Germany’s Alexander Zverev are absent. However, Team USA will rely on doubles Olympic silver medalists Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek. Germany will face Slovakia in their first match.
Group D sees host nation Great Britain go up against Finland. Despite some injury concerns, Jack Draper will represent Team GB. Finland has also faced setbacks, with Emil Ruusuvuori recently withdrawing from the tournament.
World Groups and beyond
Elsewhere, reigning Olympic champion Novak Djokovic will attempt to lead Serbia back to the top of the competition. Serbia will face Greece, with Stefano Tsitsipas leading the Greek charge, in a matchup that could determine who secures a spot in next year’s Davis Cup qualifiers.
