Bentley’s plans to bid farewell to the W-12 engine are no longer a secret, but the question remained how this would affect the Flying Spur.

The wait is over. The luxury car manufacturer Bentley has announced a revamped version of its dazzling Flying Spur sedan, incorporating the innovative plug-in hybrid V-8 engine that we have already seen in the updated Continental GT.

This powertrain, dubbed Ultra Performance Hybrid by Bentley, combines a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine that peaks at 584 horsepower with a 187-horsepower electric motor strategically placed between the combustion engine and the eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The union of both engines generates a total power of 771 horsepower and a whopping 738 pound-feet of torque.

Sustainable and fast

The electric motor draws its power from a 25.9 kWh battery, which, according to Bentley and the fairly optimistic European WLTP test cycle, offers an electric range of up to 82 kilometers.

Using the methodology of the EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency), the figure is likely closer to 64 kilometers. As in the Continental, the electric motor in the Flying Spur should allow driving at speeds of up to 140 km/h in purely electric mode, although this figure might vary slightly in the sedan.

If all these figures sound familiar, you’re not mistaken. This powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain not only powers the revamped Continental GT but is also making its way into other brands within the Volkswagen Group.

The recently announced Lamborghini Urus SE plug-in hybrid uses a slightly more powerful version of the same setup, and Porsche has just introduced a new Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid with the same system.

At the moment, not many more details about the revamped Flying Spur have been revealed beyond the powertrain. The manufacturer has only shown a single teaser image of the new car, which showcases a slightly redesigned front end.

Bentley promises to reveal more information “in due time,” so we will have to wait to learn about the aesthetic and technological novelties that accompany this significant update.
