Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc: An oasis of glamour in French Riviera

The Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc is an emblem of hotel opulence, the sunny grandeur of the Riviera, and dreams of convertibles, swaying palm trees, casino nights, and endless parties.

Being one of the oldest hotels on the French Riviera, the Hotel du Cap originally functioned as a winter hotel until after the First World War. During the war, it was even a makeshift hospital.

After the war, the swimming pool was built on the promontory to encourage stays beyond April. In addition, Eden-Roc, previously a simple tea room by the water for Red Cross nurses, became more important.

However, it was not until 1923, when the Fitzgeralds and the Murphys (a couple with excellent social connections) spent the summer there, that the Riviera season became chic.

A hotel steeped in history

F. Scott Fitzgerald used the hotel as the setting for his novel “Tender is the Night” and wrote to a friend in 1925 that the Hotel du Cap was “an escape from the whole world.”

Since 1969, it has been part of the small but exclusive German Oetker Collection (which includes Jumby Bay and La Palma in Capri). In a modern world full of rules and restrictions, moderate excesses and ostentatious seriousness, the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc does not hide its preference for the manners and luxurious hospitality of yesteryear.

The rooms offer two options: with a view of the avenue leading to the sea or the recently renovated suites in the Eden-Roc Pavilion, designed for multigenerational families (an increasingly popular request).

These suites face the bay, almost opposite Cannes. Each room has vases filled with roses from the hotel’s hundred-year-old rose garden, as well as the occasional modern touch.

A gastronomic festival

The hotel is not a maze of restaurants and bars (space is taken advantage of in its gardens), but they have managed to create different atmospheres in a discreet way. The bar in Eden-Roc Lounge resembles the top deck of a luxury yacht, where you can order the house special cocktail, made with their own gin, while watching the sunset.

Another option is to enjoy an Aviator at the Bar La Rotonde, with the soft sound of the piano in the background. A classic Martini, dry as the Sahara, was the ideal appetizer before dinner at the Eden-Roc Grill, where they offer blankets to warm up from the night chill.

The gastronomic offer is essentially French with occasional touches of American and Asian influence, from a white bread club sandwich to marinated salmon with miso and wasabi.

To relax in style, the hotel offers a Dior-designed spa, with a toile de jouy print featuring tigers that is used on everything from pajamas to cushions.

In addition to Dior Prestige high-precision facial and body massages, there is an infrared sauna, an LED light mask treatment, a traditional sauna, a hammam, and an outdoor massage gazebo with a natural pine scent.
