Hamptons Fine Art Fair: Luxury Art for an Exclusive Enclave

Each year, a 6,500-square-meter complex strategically rises between a Mercedes-Benz dealership and the Southampton golf club, creating the ideal setting for top-tier galleries and their discerning clientele.

Rick Friedman, founder and director of HFAF, is clear: location is key to success.

“There is tremendous wealth within an hour’s drive in all directions,” explains Friedman, who previously ran fairs across the country. “Instead of going to different cities and trying to attract people, here it brings them together.”

Friedman, a collector of abstract expressionist art with works by Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, understands firsthand the desires of buyers.

“I like to say ‘I eat from my own plate,'” he comments. “I buy at my own fair. If I see something I like, I buy it.”

The pandemic spurred demand for properties in the area, and Friedman sees the need to furnish these new homes as a factor that continues to drive sales.

“These grand estates have rooms with high walls capable of hosting important paintings,” he notes. “The works we sell here tend to have a certain style: large, expensive, striking, brightly colored, and fun.”

This reflects the peninsula’s character: “We are a beach resort. No one wants to buy a $30 million house here and be challenged by dark and gloomy pieces.”

This year, HFAF hosts 150 galleries from about 20 countries. Among the highlights, Friedman points out Robert Motherwell and Joan Mitchell at the Omer Tiroche Gallery in London, and Alex Katz and Ed Ruscha at the Casterline|Goodman Gallery in Aspen, Colorado.

He is also particularly enthusiastic about “Vera Paints Happiness,” an exhibition mounted by the estate of fashion designer Vera Neumann (“The Martha Stewart of the 70s”) with the paintings and drawings that inspired her scarf designs.

The opening night promises: Parsons Dance Company will entertain guests in the aisles and the VIP lounge. “Some of the best dancers in the United States will come to perform while we treat our guests to complimentary caviar and vodka,” concludes Friedman.
