Harper Collective, the sustainable luggage brand founded in 2023 by Jaden Smith and Sebastian Manes, is set to launch its first collaboration with the German luxury brand MCM.
It is reported that MCM executives discovered the new Harper Collective store within Selfridges last summer and immediately approached Smith, actor, musician, and activist, and Manes, a veteran merchandising and buying executive long associated with the London retail store.
The three co-branded suitcases (two carry-ons and one larger for check-in) will go on sale on July 11 in MCM flagship stores.
The Harper Collective website and the Harper Collective store within Selfridges, featuring furniture made from recycled fishing nets and recycled aluminum in line with their eco-friendly philosophy.
According to MCM, Smith, who released his latest single “Roses” last month, conceived the campaign, which will feature computer-generated images and graffiti by Japanese artist Inagaki.
The story revolves around an alien facing “the dilemma and opportunity of plastic waste” in Earth’s oceans.
Harper Collective’s hard cases are made in Italy and the UK from a material incorporating 70 percent recycled ocean plastics, including fishing nets and post-consumer plastics.
MCM contributed primarily recycled and eco-friendly components, including recycled nylon for the padded interior, deadstock webbing straps to secure the suitcase contents, and luggage tags made from Maxi Visetos coated canvas.
Visetos, in MCM’s signature cognac color, also wraps the suitcases’ aluminum handles, which have an industrial aesthetic. According to the partners, no two suitcases will be identical due to the recycled nature of the source material.
Sung-Joo Kim, president of MCM Group, noted that the brand, founded in Munich in 1976, emerged in an “era of innovation, exploration, and discovery in culture, travel, and technology.” More recently, MCM has leaned toward sustainability, believing that “it is our responsibility to do better for our planet and society,” Kim said.
“By taking a smart approach to developing our collection, we present a sustainable lifestyle offering through timeless designs.”
The Harper Collective x MCM range also features high-tech components. Each case includes an NFC chip linked to the blockchain to serialize and authenticate individual pieces.
Meanwhile, a digital product passport, or DPP, enabled through the Aura Blockchain Consortium platform, “allows our customers to effortlessly verify the authenticity and sustainability of their purchases by simply scanning the integrated NFC chip” and discover “the entire documented lifecycle of the product transparently,” according to MCM.
