The Formula 1 circus heads to Montreal this weekend for one of the most highly anticipated races of the season, the Canadian Grand Prix at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Before delving into the Canadian GP’s expectations and predictions, it’s crucial to recap the last Formula 1 race in Monaco. In the Principality, Charles Leclerc fulfilled his dream of winning his home Grand Prix with Ferrari, becoming the first Monegasque to win in Monte Carlo in 93 years.

Leclerc’s victory was a strategic chess match, as on a circuit where overtaking is always challenging, tire management and strategy were key. When Leclerc pushed, his rivals followed, and when he slowed, they did the same to conserve tires and maintain their strategic advantage.

Championship standings

With this victory, Ferrari’s second of the season, the Scuderia has closed the gap to Red Bull in the Constructors’ Championship. In the Drivers’ Championship, Max Verstappen remains at the front with a comfortable lead, but Leclerc and Norris are fighting to make things increasingly difficult for him.

Verstappen arrives in Canada as the big favorite, although Red Bull’s apparent dominance shows signs of waning in recent races. The Dutchman will be the man to beat, having won the last two editions of the race in Montreal. Lewis Hamilton is another driver who has a special affinity for the Gilles Villeneuve circuit, as the seven-time world champion is one of the most successful drivers in Canada alongside Michael Schumacher.

The Briton has triumphed on this circuit seven times  – 2007, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019. However, in the 2024 edition, his chances of winning are considerably lower. According to Techopedia’s list of betting sites, Max Verstappen is the favorite with odds of 1.40, reflecting his strong position and his team’s superior performance.

Lando Norris is also considered a strong contender with odds of 6.00, followed closely by Charles Leclerc with odds of 7.00. Oscar Piastri has odds of 15.00, indicating that while less likely, he remains a viable option to surprise in the race. Carlos Sainz follows with odds of 21.00, while Sergio Pérez has odds of 26.00, making his victory a major upset.
