The landscape of men’s tennis has shifted. After a historic 428 weeks at the top of the ATP rankings, including a recent 39-week reign, Novak Djokovic has relinquished the throne.

In his place ascends a young Italian prodigy, Jannik Sinner, who on Tuesday claimed the coveted No. 1 ranking at the age of 22. This marks a monumental achievement for both Sinner and Italian tennis as a whole.

Djokovic’s grip on the No. 1 spot seemed unbreakable, but fate intervened. To maintain his reign, the Serbian champion needed to reach at least the semifinals of the ongoing tournament. A win against Dimitrov would have further complicated matters for Sinner, forcing the Italian to depend on Djokovic also losing his title defense.

While Sinner secured his own victory, the news from Djokovic’s camp changed everything. Plagued by a right knee injury, the 24-time Grand Slam winner was forced to withdraw, paving the way for Sinner’s early coronation.

An amazing record

Sinner inherits the mantle from a legend. Djokovic’s first ascent to the No. 1 position came in 2011, and since then, he has established himself as the king of the rankings.

No player has held the top spot for as long as him, with his reign accumulating to a staggering 428 weeks across 11 separate stretches. His most recent stint of 39 weeks, starting in September 2023, was destined to be interrupted by an unlikely challenger.

While Sinner won’t go down as the youngest player to claim the No. 1 ranking (that honor belongs to Carlos Alcaraz, who achieved it at 19 years old), he becomes the first Italian to ever reach the pinnacle of men’s tennis.

This is the culmination of a meteoric rise that saw him climb from third to second place just two months ago, dethroning the young Spaniard Alcaraz after his victory at the Miami Open. Those two months have been transformative – he has not only overtaken Alcaraz but also toppled the seemingly immovable Djokovic, bringing an end to his long-standing reign.

An expected match

The tennis world reacted with a mix of excitement and well wishes. “It’s the dream of everyone to be No. 1,” said the reigning Australian Open champion Sinner, expressing his elation. He also offered his support to Djokovic, wishing him a speedy recovery from his injury.

The story doesn’t end there. Sinner’s next challenge awaits in the semifinals of the Roland Garros tournament. Here, a highly anticipated clash between Sinner (now ranked second) and Alcaraz (third) will unfold. This highly-charged encounter between the young guns is sure to be a thrilling display of skill and athleticism, marking a symbolic passing of the torch in the world of men’s tennis.
