VIK Chile did not quietly slip into the spotlight. It walked onto the global stage in 2025 and claimed the top spot in The World’s 50 Best Vineyards list, beating icons from Germany, Spain and France to be named the best vineyard on the planet. The awards ceremony took place in Margaret River, Western Australia, and confirmed what enotourism insiders already suspected. Millahue, the “Place of Gold” in central Chile, had just become the new capital of wine travel.

Behind that victory sits a very deliberate experiment. Founded in 2006 by Alexander and Carrie Vik after a two year scientific search across South America, VIK Chile combines 4,300 hectares of wild landscape with only a fraction under vine, planted in 12 micro valleys that were mapped through thousands of soil studies. The result is a destination where architecture, art, sustainability and serious wine share the same stage.

Why did VIK Chile become the world’s best vineyard?

The World’s 50 Best Vineyards list judges the full experience, not only what is in the glass. VIK Chile had already ranked among the global top ten for several years before finally taking the No.1 position in 2025, becoming the highest rated vineyard in South America.

Key ingredients behind that rise include:

  • A dramatic setting in Millahue Valley between the Andes and the Coastal Range

  • A vast private reserve where native forest surrounds the vines

  • A compact portfolio of high end blends led by VIK, Milla Cala and La Piu Belle

What makes staying at VIK Chile feel so different?

Check in here and the hotel itself feels like a sculpture. The retreat crowns a hilltop, wrapped in a floating titanium and bronze roof that mirrors the surrounding mountains, with 360 degree views over vineyards, lake and Andes.

Inside, each of the 22 suites is individually designed, filled with contemporary art, and framed by floor to ceiling glass. Puro Vik, a cluster of seven glass bungalows built into the hillside, pushes the immersion further, with outdoor tubs and nearly invisible walls that turn the valley into your living room. Infinity pool, wine spa and farm to table dining at Milla Milla complete a very photogenic equation.

How does VIK Chile turn science and art into wine?

In the cellar, VIK Chile’s team treats terroir like a laboratory of ideas. The flagship VIK blend, together with Milla Cala and La Piu Belle, relies on classic Bordeaux grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Carmenère, grown on granitic, well drained soils that deliver freshness and fine tannins.

Innovation shows up in projects like Barroir, where French oak staves are toasted on fires made from fallen native oak, and Amphoir, which uses amphorae crafted from local clay. Both techniques, along with fermentations that rely on native yeasts, aim to express Millahue’s character more clearly in the glass. StoneVik, a natural wine aged in those clay vessels high in the hills, has already received critical praise, while the 2021 vintage of VIK reached a perfect 100 points from critic James Suckling.

VIK Chile’s new status as the world’s best vineyard is not a lucky vintage. It is the logical outcome of a long game that fused data, daring architecture and a radical sense of place. For travelers who collect experiences as carefully as bottles, Millahue now offers a rare combination. You can sleep inside a design icon, walk through a private nature reserve, and taste wines shaped by the very soil under your feet. The golden place on the label is suddenly a very real destination on the map.
