Where to Dine: Thanksgiving Feasts with a View

Ajax Tavern

Nestled at the base of Aspen Mountain, Ajax Tavern is the quintessential après-ski spot, but on Thanksgiving, it transforms into a holiday destination. Starting at 3:00 pm, their special Plat du Jour menu features wine-paired Thanksgiving classics, culminating in a decadent pumpkin pie with caramel and vanilla cream. Craving their famous truffle fries? The regular menu is also available, ensuring you don’t miss out on their signature dishes.

Hotel Jerome

For a more traditional yet elevated experience, Hotel Jerome’s Thanksgiving Harvest Feast is a must. Held in the historic ballroom, the menu blends Roaring Fork Valley flavors with timeless holiday favorites—think chef-carved classics, seasonal sides, and a decadent seafood array. The ambiance is pure Aspen elegance, making it ideal for families and groups.

Where to Pause: Artisanal Coffee & Quiet Moments

Sant Ambroeus

After a hearty meal, retreat to Sant Ambroeus for a Milanese-inspired coffee break. Their Aspen outpost is renowned for its espresso drinks, fluffy tiramisu, and signature Sant Ambroeus—a blend of espresso and thick hot chocolate. Settle into vintage Italian sofas or take your drink to-go as you stroll through downtown Aspen.

Swedish Hill

Perched on the rooftop of the Aspen Art Museum, Swedish Hill offers panoramic mountain views and a menu of freshly baked pastries, sandwiches, and specialty coffees. It’s the ideal spot to relax with a book or simply soak in the alpine scenery after a day on the slopes.

Explore Books and Coffee

For a literary escape, head to Explore Booksellers, a beloved Aspen institution since 1975. Their upstairs café serves coffee, pastries, and even beer and wine, providing a tranquil space to unwind among shelves of carefully curated books.  Explore Books and Coffe is a true “third space” for reflection and relaxation.

Where to Admire Art and History

This Thanksgiving week, Aspen invites visitors to immerse themselves in both contemporary art and rich local history. At the Aspen Art Museum, two compelling new exhibitions opened on Friday, November 21st: Glenn Ligon: Break It Down and Shahryar Nashat: Raw is the Red.

These exhibitions promise to challenge and inspire, showcasing Ligon’s text-based explorations of race, language, and identity, alongside Nashat’s evocative video and installation works. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 6 pm, with free admission—making it an accessible cultural stop for families and art enthusiasts alike.

For those eager to delve into Aspen’s past, the Aspen Historical Society offers À la Carte Experiences daily in downtown Aspen. You can hire a knowledgeable history guide to tailor a tour or museum visit to your interests, whether you’re fascinated by the town’s mining roots, its transformation into a world-class resort, or the stories of its early settlers.

These custom experiences are scheduled based on staff availability, allowing you to explore Aspen’s heritage at your own pace and according to your own curiosity.

Together, these offerings provide a perfect blend of creativity and context. The Aspen Art Museum’s thought-provoking exhibitions and the Aspen Historical Society’s personalized tours ensure that visitors can enjoy a Thanksgiving week enriched by both artistic innovation and historical depth.

Whether you’re drawn to the bold statements of contemporary art or the enduring narratives of Aspen’s history, both institutions offer unique ways to connect with the heart and soul of this iconic mountain town.
