In the evolving landscape of wealth management, billionaire investments are shifting from traditional portfolios to passion-driven assets.

According to JPMorgan’s 2025 Principal Discussions Report, the world’s ultra-wealthy are increasingly allocating capital to sports franchises and fine art, not just for financial returns but for legacy, influence, and cultural impact.

The report, based on interviews with 111 billionaires across 28 countries, reveals that 34% of respondents now hold stakes in professional sports teams, while 23% invest heavily in art collections / Photo via NBA

The report, based on interviews with 111 billionaires across 28 countries, reveals that 34% of respondents now hold stakes in professional sports teams, while 23% invest heavily in art collections.

These figures mark a significant rise from previous years, signaling a broader redefinition of what wealth means—and how it’s expressed.

Sports: The Billionaire’s Playing Field

Owning a sports team has become one of the most coveted forms of investment among billionaires.

JPMorgan’s data shows that 20% of respondents already have controlling stakes in clubs, up from just 6% in 2022. The appeal lies in a mix of emotional connection, brand visibility, and long-term growth potential.

From soccer clubs in Europe to NBA teams in the U.S., sports franchises offer billionaires a platform to engage with global audiences, shape cultural narratives, and even influence urban development.

These investments are no longer vanity projects—they’re strategic assets with diversified revenue streams, including media rights, merchandising, and stadium real estate.

Art: A Canvas for Legacy

Art remains a timeless investment, but its role in billionaire portfolios is evolving. With 23% of respondents actively acquiring works from both contemporary and classical artists, the art market is being reshaped by private collectors who view their holdings as both cultural capital and financial instruments.

Pieces by Goya, Basquiat, and emerging talents are being purchased not only for aesthetic value but also for their potential to appreciate over time.

Art fairs, private galleries, and museum partnerships are now part of the billionaire investment ecosystem, offering visibility and prestige alongside returns.

Purpose Over Profit

What sets these billionaire investments apart is the motivation behind them. JPMorgan’s report highlights a growing emphasis on purpose-driven investing—where passion, legacy, and social impact matter as much as profit.

Whether it’s revitalizing a local sports team or preserving cultural heritage through art, billionaires are using their capital to shape narratives and leave lasting marks.

This trend also reflects a generational shift. Younger billionaires are more inclined to diversify into experiential and cultural assets, viewing them as extensions of personal identity and influence. The result is a more nuanced, emotionally intelligent approach to wealth management.

The rise of sports and art in billionaire investments signals a transformation in how the ultra-wealthy build and express their portfolios. These assets offer more than financial returns—they provide legacy, visibility, and cultural relevance.

As the lines between passion and profit continue to blur, expect to see more billionaires turning stadiums and galleries into their next boardrooms.
