Few fragrances have defined perfumery history quite like Shalimar. Created in 1925 by Jacques Guerlain, this revolutionary scent marked the birth of the world’s first amber perfume.

To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Guerlain unveils Shalimar L’Essence, a reinvention that pays homage to the original masterpiece while infusing it with modern sensuality.

Inspired by one of the most romantic tales in history, Shalimar was born from the story of Emperor Shah Jahan and his beloved Mumtaz Mahal.

Their love gave rise to the legendary gardens of Shalimar and, later, to the Taj Mahal itself—a monument of eternal devotion.

Jacques Guerlain translated this emotional narrative into scent, crafting a perfume that would embody timeless love and infinite beauty.

An Alchemy of Emotion and Innovation

Legend says the creation of Shalimar began with an experiment. During a visit to his chemist friend Justin DuPont, Jacques Guerlain discovered ethylvanillin, a molecule with a deliciously warm vanilla scent.

Out of curiosity, he added a few drops to a bottle of his earlier perfume, Jicky (1889). The result was nothing short of alchemical genius—a composition so daring and intoxicating that it redefined the boundaries of fragrance forever.

This fusion of innovation and romance became the foundation for what Guerlain would later call “the scent of desire.”

The warmth of amber, the sweetness of vanilla, and the elegance of iris merged into a sensory poem that transcended fashion and time.

A Bottle Worthy of a Love Story

The perfume’s aura extended far beyond its scent. To contain such emotion, Jacques turned to his nephew Raymond Guerlain for the design.

The result was a vessel inspired by the fountains of the Shalimar gardens—its curves soft, yet regal.

Maison Baccarat crafted the original stopper from sapphire-blue crystal, its color meant to mirror the midnight skies over India.

This design won first prize at the 1925 Exhibition of Decorative Arts and Modern Industry, establishing Shalimar not only as a perfume but as an icon of Art Deco elegance.

The Heart of Guerlain’s Craft

Over six decades, Jacques Guerlain transformed perfumery, creating over 400 fragrances and establishing the legendary “Guerlinade.”

This signature accord—blending vanilla, tonka bean, bergamot, rose, jasmine, and iris—became the olfactory DNA of the Maison. Within it, Shalimar found its soul.

From the first spritz, the fragrance reveals luminous bergamot and powdery florals, melting into velvety vanilla and sensual balsams.

It is at once intimate and grand, like whispered poetry in a marble palace.

The New Era: Shalimar L’Essence

A hundred years later, Guerlain revisits this legend with Shalimar L’Essence, a contemporary expression that celebrates the brand’s enduring artistry.

Here, the vanilla note takes center stage—crafted from hand-cut organic pods grown in Madagascar and refined in the Orphin workshops.

The new composition radiates warmth, amplifying the sensual heart that made Shalimar a symbol of eternal femininity.

The bottle maintains its Art Deco silhouette, now adorned with gold detailing that bridges heritage and innovation.

A Timeless Celebration of Femininity

Through every era, Shalimar has remained a fragrance of power and seduction. It has adorned the dressing tables of queens, actresses, and dreamers alike.

Its scent evokes mystery and self-confidence—an invisible jewel worn by women who dare to be unforgettable.
