Hidden in the heart of Bali’s rainforest, Capella Ubud invites travelers to slow down, reconnect, and realign.

More than a hotel, it feels like an emerald cocoon—a sanctuary that quiets the noise of modern life and restores balance.

Architect Bill Bensley designed this retreat with a single mission: to help guests perform a true factory reset. Every path, ritual, and texture guides visitors from overstimulation to serenity.

How Does Architecture Create a Sense of Renewal?

Capella Ubud’s design proves that luxury can exist in harmony with nature. The resort sits deep within the Wos River Valley in Keliki Village. Instead of conquering the jungle, the architecture bends to its rhythm.

Bensley’s approach follows the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which promotes harmony with God, nature, and people. To honor this, no trees were cut during construction. Each tent was placed between existing trunks. Some terraces even rise around palms that pierce the deck.

The design team built bamboo mockups on site to study how sunlight, humidity, and topography shaped the land. This “minimal intervention” method ensured the forest stayed intact.

Each of the 22 tented suites and the two-bedroom lodge tells a story. One celebrates “The Explorer,” another “The Cartographer.” Inside, guests find vintage objects, hand-carved Balinese doors, and teak floors made in Central Java. These details evoke a 19th-century expedition and help travelers mentally step out of the present world.

The effect is powerful: architecture becomes therapy. Guests do not just visit the jungle, they become part of it.

How Does Capella Ubud Redefine Wellness?

At Capella Ubud, wellness is written in the stars and the moon.
The property’s Auriga Wellness spa bases its treatments on lunar cycles, believing each phase influences body and mood.

  • New Moon – Renewal: Energy feels low. Massages focus on stimulation and circulation.

  • Full Moon – Pacification: Emotions peak. Treatments calm the body and release tension.

Only natural, organic oils are used, mixed exclusively for the resort. Guests may enjoy therapies in the spa tents or within their private retreat, surrounded by jungle sounds.

The spiritual side of healing unfolds at The Beji, a sacred spring within the property. Here, the Melukat ritual, a Balinese water cleansing ceremony, invites guests to release emotional weight. Dressed in traditional sarongs, participants are guided by a local priest through offerings, chanting, and holy water purification.

The ritual ends with a Tridatu bracelet, symbolizing creation, preservation, and transformation. Together, these practices form the heart of Capella Ubud’s philosophy: renewal through alignment with nature and spirit.

What Experiences Complete the Reset?

Transformation requires both stillness and challenge. Capella Ubud designs experiences that awaken the body and feed the soul.

Climb Mount Batur at Sunrise.
Guests begin before dawn to reach the 1,717-meter summit. The reward? A luminous view of Bali’s volcanic caldera, where colors shift from violet to amber. The physical exertion becomes symbolic, a rebirth above the clouds.

Cycle the Villages of Kintamani.
The Batur Freewheel Journey leads guests through quiet backroads and rice terraces. Local guides like Pak Dewa, a fifth-generation farmer, share insight into Balinese agriculture and cooking traditions. This gentle exploration connects travelers with authentic village life.

Support a Living Ecosystem.
Sustainability is not a side note, it is embedded in daily practice. In December 2024, Capella Ubud earned the EarthCheck Gold Certification, confirming five years of sustainable excellence.

Eco-initiatives include:

  • A water bottling system using nano-filtration, eliminating single-use plastics.

  • Composting organic waste to nourish the on-site gardens.

  • Partnering with the ROLE Foundation to recycle used soaps for local families.

  • Providing English classes in exchange for collected plastic bottles, promoting both education and recycling.

Every action supports the Balinese triad of balance, between people, planet, and spirit.

Capella Ubud stands as a living lesson in conscious luxury.

Its tented architecture proves restraint can be more indulgent than excess. Its wellness rituals fuse ancient cosmology with modern science. And its community partnerships turn sustainability into daily practice.

Here, the “factory reset” is not a metaphor, it’s a process. Guests leave lighter, quieter, and deeply reconnected to the rhythms of the earth.
