Luxury once relied on rarity and precious materials. Under Demna Gvasalia, Balenciaga replaced those pillars with irony, context, and cultural friction.

Rather than distancing fashion from the ordinary, Demna brought the everyday directly onto the runway. His work reframes luxury as an intellectual gesture, where meaning matters more than material.

How did everyday objects become luxury statements?

The Tape Bracelet, introduced in Fall Winter 2024, is the most distilled example of this approach. Designed to resemble a roll of transparent packing tape, the oversized bangle is crafted from lightweight polymer resin and priced between USD 3,300 and 4,400.

Its power lies in restraint. There is no distressing, no exaggeration. The object appears untouched, almost invisible. By transforming a logistical tool into jewelry, Balenciaga asks whether luxury now resides in narrative rather than substance.

Why does provocation drive Balenciaga’s cultural relevance?

The Trash Pouch made this strategy impossible to ignore. Launched in 2022, the bag replicates a household garbage sack but is crafted in glossy calfskin leather and sold for USD 1,790.

Public reaction ranged from outrage to parody, especially across Asian social platforms. That response is central to the design. Balenciaga does not avoid mockery. It converts it into visibility. In doing so, the brand remains embedded in cultural conversation rather than seasonal trends.

Is destruction the new symbol of value?

The Paris Destroyed Sneakers pushed the concept further. In 2022, Balenciaga released a limited run of one hundred pairs designed to appear worn beyond repair, complete with holes, stains, and frayed edges. The price reached USD 1,850.

Critics accused the brand of aestheticizing poverty. The controversy only amplified the message. These shoes were never about wearability. They were about forcing discomfort around how luxury consumes visual codes of hardship.

From packing tape to trash bags to ruined sneakers, Balenciaga’s everyday objects are not jokes. They are calculated instruments that expose how value is manufactured in contemporary culture. Under Demna, luxury no longer promises beauty. It asks questions.
