In a world saturated with interchangeable luxury hotels, HOSHINOYA stands apart. It offers not spectacle, but depth. Silence instead of excess. Ritual instead of routine.

Rooted in centuries of Japanese hospitality, HOSHINOYA redefines what contemporary luxury means by honoring place, time, and human connection. Its story is not about expansion, but intention.

When Was HOSHINOYA Created?

The origins of HOSHINOYA trace back to 1914, when the Hoshino family opened Hoshino Onsen Ryokan in Karuizawa. This early retreat became a cultural haven for writers and intellectuals in the early twentieth century.

The modern concept of HOSHINOYA, however, officially emerged in 2005, under the leadership of Yoshiharu Hoshino. Educated at Cornell University, he transformed the family legacy into a contemporary luxury brand while preserving the soul of the traditional ryokan.

This dual timeline is essential. HOSHINOYA is both heritage and reinvention.

What Makes HOSHINOYA Special?

HOSHINOYA rejects standardization. Each property is designed specifically for its environment, whether nestled in forests, riversides, mountains, or dense urban centers. Architecture, landscape, and interiors respond directly to local history and nature.

Service follows the Japanese principle of omotenashi, based on anticipation rather than hierarchy. Staff members accompany guests through multiple moments of their stay, creating continuity and trust.

Experiences emphasize presence. From onsen bathing rituals to seasonal cuisine and digital detox programs, HOSHINOYA invites guests to slow down and reconnect.

What Awards and Recognition Has It Received?

HOSHINOYA properties consistently appear on leading global rankings. HOSHINOYA Tokyo has been included in The World’s 50 Best Hotels list and regularly features in Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards.

HOSHINOYA Kyoto has earned top distinctions from the Michelin Guide for ryokans, recognizing both service excellence and cultural integrity.

The brand has also received sustainability and design awards, particularly for HOSHINOYA Karuizawa, praised for its long standing use of renewable energy and ecological integration.

HOSHINOYA proves that modern luxury does not require reinvention through excess. Instead, it thrives through restraint, cultural intelligence, and emotional resonance.

By honoring tradition while embracing thoughtful innovation, HOSHINOYA offers something increasingly rare. A place where time slows, and meaning quietly returns.
