The Miami Design District marks ten years of daring public art with a new commission that reshapes its creative identity.

This year’s edition introduces Gargantua’s Thumb by Katie Stout, an ambitious installation that transforms familiar forms into whimsical monuments.

The project debuts during Miami Art Week and remains visible well into the new year. Its presence strengthens the District’s commitment to bold spatial storytelling.

Katie Stout’s Sculptural Imagination

Katie Stout brings a unique vision shaped by a multidisciplinary practice. Her work often bends function toward narrative and fantasy.

She creates objects that feel both tender and subversive. Her widely recognized ceramic girl lamps challenge ideas tied to luxury, femininity, and craft.

Gargantua’s Thumb extends that sensibility through a collection of oversized creatures that occupy the neighborhood’s plazas and walkways.

Stout’s approach begins with clay. Each piece originates as a small hand-sculpted figure infused with irregularities.

These small gestures become crucial once scaled up. The digital enlargement process magnifies every quirky contour.

This transformation preserves the intimacy of the original object while granting it monumental presence.

A Neighborhood Transformed

The installation reshapes the District with benches that resemble charming animals. A dog-like seat invites rest.

A whale-shaped lounging form softens the surrounding urban geometry. A frog-inspired perch sparks playful curiosity. All reflect the project’s desire to merge function with storytelling.

At the center of the district, an interactive carousel becomes the project’s most immersive gesture. Its slow rotation encourages visitors to pause and observe the space from new angles.

This carousel deepens the neighborhood’s identity as a cultural destination where design activates public life.

Suspended above the streets, hundreds of colorful orbs add another layer of fantasy. Each orb contains tiny sculpted elements referencing flora and fauna.

Together they create a floating canopy that transforms tree-lined paths into surreal, dreamlike passages.

The effect enhances the District’s existing architecture while encouraging exploration at a gentle, deliberate rhythm.

Design Miami and a Celebrated Legacy

The project also appears at Design Miami’s 20th anniversary fair, reinforcing its presence within the global design landscape.

Leaders from Design Miami celebrate the commission for its imaginative spirit and for the ways it brings creativity into daily life.

The Annual Design Commission has evolved into a defining cultural anchor. Past editions have introduced installations that merge experimentation with public engagement.

Each project becomes a temporary landmark, weaving art into the urban fabric.

This 10th anniversary highlights the influence of previous visionaries who helped shape the District’s reputation.

Their contributions form a lineage that now welcomes Gargantua’s Thumb as a new chapter.

A Decade of Creative Transformation

Since 2015, the Annual Design Commission has acted as a catalyst for Miami’s creative ecosystem.

The District’s pedestrian pathways, lush courtyards, and sleek architectural lines offer fertile ground for radical ideas.

Gargantua’s Thumb by Katie Stout embodies this ambition by turning functional objects into fantastical companions for the public.

Its playful nature contrasts the precision often associated with design-focused environments. Yet the irregularities at the heart of the project become essential. They remind visitors that creativity thrives in imperfections.

Stout’s enlarged creatures celebrate the handmade and the emotional resonance of tactile work.

As the District reflects on a decade of commissions, this installation reinforces its mission. It invites viewers to engage, discover, and return.

It is monumental yet approachable. Strange yet familiar. And unmistakably alive.

With Gargantua’s Thumb by Katie Stout, the Miami Design District renews its commitment to design that awakens curiosity and invites community.

The installation stands as a vibrant testament to the neighborhood’s evolving cultural identity.
