The 2025 F1 season has been one of the most thrilling in recent history. After 23 races, the championship remains undecided, with three drivers separated by just 16 points. Lando Norris leads with 408 points, followed closely by Oscar Piastri with 396 and Max Verstappen with 392.

With only one race left at Yas Marina, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will determine who becomes the next world champion.

Norris: The Favorite

Lando Norris enters the final round as the frontrunner. His 12-point advantage over Verstappen and 16 over Piastri means that a podium finish would secure the title. Even if he finishes lower, Norris benefits from a superior tally of second-place finishes, which serve as a tiebreaker if points are equal. His consistency throughout the season has been his greatest strength, and Abu Dhabi offers him the chance to convert that into his first F1 championship.

Verstappen: The Challenger

Max Verstappen, already a three-time world champion, faces a more complex path. To win the title, he must finish on the podium and rely on Norris faltering. His best chance lies in victory, combined with Norris finishing fourth or lower. Anything less than a podium eliminates his chances. Verstappen’s experience and resilience make him a formidable opponent, but the odds are stacked against him.

Piastri: The Outsider

Oscar Piastri remains mathematically alive but requires near-perfect conditions. He must win the race and hope Norris finishes sixth or worse. Alternatively, a second-place finish could suffice if Norris drops to tenth and Verstappen fails to reach the podium. For Piastri, the challenge is monumental, but his breakthrough season has already marked him as a rising star in F1.

The Decisive Factors

  • Points system: 25 for a win, 18 for second, 15 for third, down to 1 for tenth.

  • Tiebreakers: Number of wins, then second-place finishes. All three drivers currently have seven wins, but Norris leads in second places (8 vs. Verstappen’s 5 and Piastri’s 4).

  • Pressure: Norris must manage expectations, Verstappen must gamble, and Piastri must chase a miracle.

The 2025 F1 championship epitomizes the unpredictability of motorsport. Norris holds the advantage, Verstappen lurks as a seasoned threat, and Piastri dreams of an upset. On December 7th in Abu Dhabi, the world will witness history as one of these three drivers claims the crown. Regardless of the outcome, this season has already secured its place among the most thrilling in F1 history.
