The project Polo Ralph Lauren x TÓPA grows from Polo’s ongoing Artist in Residence initiative, which highlights creators who carry deep artistic lineages.

TÓPA, led by Jocy and Trae Little Sky, expands this vision with a focused interpretation of ancestral design traditions.

Their approach blends Native motifs with Polo’s iconic silhouettes, producing garments shaped by symbolism and grounded craftsmanship.

Design Codes Guided by Dakota, Nakota, and Lakota Traditions

The collaboration distills a rich cultural vocabulary into wearable pieces. Each item reflects motifs cherished by the Dakota, Nakota, and Lakota peoples, giving the capsule a defined artistic pulse.

Patterns echo the trails of the Dakota valley, honoring landscapes that influence TÓPA’s creative identity.

Sweaters, chore jackets, and tailored trousers feature boldly structured borders that express movement and memory. Their intarsia textures highlight the precision and rhythm of Native artistry.

Textures Crafted With Purpose

A studded leather jacket becomes the standout piece of the collection. It carries four-pointed stars and a mirrored thípi symbol that brings an Americana tone shaped by Indigenous narratives.

These elements merge familiar Western codes with cultural markers that hold generational significance.

The result is a garment that balances rugged presence with ceremonial depth, strengthening the essence of the Polo Ralph Lauren x TÓPA partnership.

TÓPA: A Name With Ancestral Weight

The label’s name forms the foundation of its philosophy. “TÓPA,” meaning “four” within the Oceti Sakowin languages, reflects directions, seasons, stages of life, and essential colors.

This number functions as a compass that shapes the founders’ work. Jocy carries Dakota heritage, along with ties to the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation.

Trae represents Oglala Lakota and Stoney Nakoda communities.

Their identity guides the capsule’s visual storytelling, nurturing a creative process that preserves ancestral integrity.

A Legacy of Craft Passed Through Generations

Jocy and Trae honor their communities beyond fashion. They create traditional regalia for Pow Wows using quilling, beadwork, and leather techniques transmitted across generations.

These methods hold cultural memory, allowing each piece to echo stories inherent to their heritage.

The Polo Ralph Lauren x TÓPA capsule channels this craft lineage while placing it within a modern ready-to-wear context.

Design as Language and Responsibility

The collaboration carries emotional purpose for the founders. Jocy emphasizes admiration for Ralph Lauren’s world-building philosophy and sees this project as a pathway to celebrate cultural continuity.

She hopes the capsule inspires others to embrace their roots, value their identity, and protect the traditions that shape their communities.

Supporting the Communities That Shape the Story

Polo reinforces this partnership through community investment. The company will donate a portion of each purchase to the Thunder Valley Community Development Corporation.

This organization strengthens the Lakota Language and Education Initiative, helping preserve linguistic heritage and support youth programs.

The Artist in Residence series, launched in 2023, continues expanding collaborations that amplify craft, storytelling, and cultural respect.
