Icons like Louis Vuitton’s Neverfull and Hermès’ Birkin continue to stand out as some of the most reliable fashion “assets,” proving that a vintage bag can hold value more steadily than many traditional investments.

Several factors explain this phenomenon:

  • First, people naturally gravitate toward beautiful, high-end items.
  • Second, luxury classics—much like fine jewelry—rarely fall out of style, and purchasing them second-hand often comes at a far more accessible price point.
  • And finally, many handbag enthusiasts—of which there are thousands—frequently rotate their collections, selling last season’s treasure for a bit less so they can invest in a new piece.

Ranked, a platform dedicated to collecting data on luxury resale, published a study based on insights from Tradesy, one of the most popular online destinations for sourcing a vintage bag in excellent condition.

Luxury Resale Revolution

According to the findings, the best investment-worthy handbags come from heritage houses like Chanel, Hermès, and Louis Vuitton. Classics such as the Chanel Classic Flap, Hermès Birkin, and Louis Vuitton Neverfull consistently maintain high resale values. Additional pieces that perform well in the secondary market include the Chanel 2.55, the Hermès Kelly, and the Gucci Jackie 1961.

The report highlights that Louis Vuitton’s Neverfull and Hermès’ Birkin are among the most stable models when it comes to resale pricing. Other bags, like Goyard’s limited editions, can even surpass their original value—something collectors have long understood.

A Birkin, for instance, may resell for as much as 1.3 times its retail price if it’s well-maintained and part of a rare collection. A Goyard can reach similar numbers, while a classic Chanel model in excellent shape can often sell for its original retail cost.

Key Factors When Investing in a Vintage Bag

Condition: A well-maintained bag always commands a higher resale price.

Rarity: Limited editions or older models tend to attract passionate collectors.

Popularity: Styles that are trending again—like the Gucci Jackie 1961 or Saint Laurent’s Le 5 à 7—may offer promising returns.

In general, Tradesy reports that a second-hand seller with a well-cared-for item can recover around 63% of what they initially paid. For example, a handbag that originally cost $1,100 may sell for roughly $700 on the resale market. The platform has even seen rare Hermès Birkins reach astonishing numbers, including one that sold for $68,000.
