In a bold architectural statement that fuses cultural reverence with cutting-edge design, Foster + Partners has completed the Techo International Airport in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

This monumental project marks a new chapter in Southeast Asia’s aviation landscape, offering not only a gateway to the world but also a tribute to Cambodia’s rich architectural legacy.

Located 20 kilometers south of the capital, the airport is more than a transit hub—it’s a symbol of national ambition and regional connectivity. With its curved steel structure wrapped in latticed panels, the terminal evokes the elegance of traditional Cambodian craftsmanship while embracing the demands of modern infrastructure.

A Design That Breathes Culture and Climate

At the heart of the airport lies a central terminal flanked by two aerofoil-shaped piers, a layout that prioritizes efficiency and intuitive passenger flow. The northern pier is already operational, while the southern counterpart is slated for completion by 2030. The terminal’s undulating roof, supported by tree-like columns spanning 36 meters, creates a continuous canopy that shelters check-in, security, and retail zones.

Foster + Partners drew inspiration from Cambodia’s temples and palaces, translating vernacular motifs into a contemporary architectural language. The latticed panels that envelop the structure are more than decorative—they serve a functional purpose, filtering daylight and reducing solar gain, a thoughtful response to the region’s tropical climate.

Engineering Meets Elegance

The terminal’s modular steel grid and vaulted roof structure are feats of engineering that echo the grandeur of Angkor Wat while maintaining a light, breathable atmosphere. The design incorporates 180 skylights, allowing natural light to permeate the interior and enhancing the passenger experience with a sense of openness and serenity.

This architectural choreography is not merely aesthetic. It reflects Foster + Partners’ commitment to sustainability, with passive cooling strategies and material choices that reduce environmental impact. The terminal’s layout also minimizes walking distances and maximizes visibility, making it easy for travelers to navigate.

A Catalyst for Economic Growth

Beyond its architectural merits, Techo International Airport is a cornerstone of Cambodia’s long-term development strategy. The airport is part of a 24-square-kilometer masterplan, envisioned as an “airport city” to stimulate investment, tourism, and regional trade. With a projected capacity to handle millions of passengers annually, the facility is poised to become a vital node in Asia’s aviation network.

Foster + Partners has not only delivered a world-class terminal but also helped shape a vision for Cambodia’s future—one that balances tradition with innovation, and local identity with global ambition.
