In the heart of Holborn, Scarfes Bar London is more than a place to sip a cocktail—it’s a cultural statement. Nestled within the Rosewood Hotel at 252 High Holborn, the bar redefines hospitality by fusing caricature, craft, and comfort into an atmosphere that feels both eccentric and timeless.

The story begins with inspiration from New York’s Bemelmans Bar at The Carlyle, where illustrator Ludwig Bemelmans left his whimsical mark. In 2014, Rosewood turned to celebrated British caricaturist Gerald Scarfe, envisioning a space where his irreverent art would be the very soul of the bar. The result is a haven of luxury without pretension, where each detail serves as an invitation to indulge in art, sound, and taste.

How Does Scarfes Bar Become a Living Canvas?

Walking into Scarfes Bar feels like stepping into a grand British drawing room layered with eccentricity. Antique books line shelves from floor to ceiling, velvet sofas invite sinking, and a fireplace crackles with warmth. But the true personality comes from Gerald Scarfe’s ten-foot oil paintings, which adorn marble walls with wit and satire.

Scarfe’s career spans political cartoons for The New Yorker and The Sunday Times, collaborations with Pink Floyd on The Wall, and Disney’s Hercules. At Scarfes, his satirical portraits of Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, The Beatles, and the Royal Family bring bold humor to the bar’s traditional design. The interplay of classic elegance and subversive art creates a space that is at once stately and mischievous—a salon where refinement flirts with rebellion.

What Makes the Cocktails a Story in Themselves?

Scarfes Bar’s commitment to artistry flows into its cocktails. The current menu, “Long Drawn Out Sip”, draws from Scarfe’s memoir Long Drawn Out Trip, with drinks arranged in emotional “chapters” of Desires, Fears, Revelations, and Transformations. Each cocktail is an illustrated journey, built around unpublished caricatures from Scarfe’s archives.

Highlights include:

  • Toothless Grin (Fears) – a theatrical twist on the Sazerac, made with cognac, Medjool dates, beetroot, and citra hops, served with a spoon delivering goat’s cheese and absinthe aromatics.

  • Smokey Maria – a reinvention of the Bloody Mary with Patron Silver and smoked clamato.

  • Paper Glider – bright with Highland Park 12, Aperol, peach, and maple verjus, glowing like a golden sunset.

  • Call Me Nutty – a warm hazelnut-tonka creation with Michter’s Rye.

Priced between £20–24, these drinks prove that mixology here is storytelling in liquid form, designed as experiences as much as flavors.

How Does Music and Dining Complete the Experience?

Every night, live jazz, blues, and soul transform the room into a resonant stage. Music begins at 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7 p.m. on Sundays, flowing until late, weaving a soundtrack of sophistication and intimacy. Guests are as likely to tap their feet as to lose themselves in conversation.

To accompany the drinks, Scarfes offers elevated bar bites: Aberdeen Angus steak strips, Devonshire crab toast, or tuna tacos. Small in size but rich in craft, these plates align perfectly with the ethos of quality over excess. Together, art, cocktails, food, and music form an immersive symphony—each element enhancing the others for a total sensory journey.

Its recognition on The World’s 50 Best Bars list and accolades like “Best International Hotel Bar” only affirm what patrons already know: Scarfes is where art inspires taste, and taste inspires memory.
