Max Verstappen began the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from pole position after an extraordinary qualifying session at the Baku City Circuit.

The qualifying drama was shaped by a combination of yellow flags, accidents, unpredictable winds, and brief rain showers that pushed drivers to the limit. As a result, the starting grid looks far from conventional, with Carlos Sainz lining up alongside Verstappen on the front row, while Liam Lawson and Kimi Antonelli secured surprising places just behind.

Both Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc crashed out in the final segment, leaving Ferrari and McLaren with overnight repair work, while Lando Norris managed only seventh on the grid.

When the race itself unfolded, Verstappen delivered a commanding drive, securing victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after Oscar Piastri’s misfortune opened the door for rivals. Piastri, who had already endured a qualifying crash, suffered an even worse blow when he collided again on the very first lap at Turn 3 following a jump start, ending his race immediately.

Baku Madness

For Verstappen, the triumph marked his second consecutive win after his success in Italy, giving him back-to-back victories for the first time in over a year. The result closed the championship deficit to 69 points with 199 still up for grabs. He also set the fastest lap and achieved his sixth career grand chelem, underlining his dominance.

McLaren’s hopes of maximizing the opportunity slipped away, as Lando Norris lost valuable ground due to a slow pit stop, eventually crossing the line in seventh. That result left him 25 points adrift of Piastri in the standings. McLaren, meanwhile, missed the chance to secure consecutive constructors’ championships for the first time in more than three decades and will have to wait until the Singapore round in two weeks.

Williams Back on the Podium

George Russell, battling illness throughout the weekend, impressed with a strong drive to second in his Mercedes, while Carlos Sainz delivered a memorable podium in third for Williams—his first since departing Ferrari at the end of last season. Behind them, Kimi Antonelli managed to erase recent setbacks with a strong fourth, Lawson finished an excellent fifth, followed by Tsunoda, Norris, Hamilton, Leclerc, and Hadjar, rounding out the top ten.

In the end, Verstappen crossed the finish line 14.6 seconds clear of Russell, confirming once more why the Azerbaijan Grand Prix remains one of the most unpredictable and thrilling stops on the calendar. Attention now shifts to the Singapore Grand Prix at Marina Bay, scheduled for October 3–5, the 18th round of this year’s Formula 1 season.
